Sticker V Falmouth 2nds

Recommended Posts

This weekend was our first trip of summer to stay a couple of days with our friends in Penzance.
Enroute we wouldn't miss the chance to see a game of football at a club that we always enjoy our visit to, and watch the Sticker v Falmouth Town 2nd team game.
Imagine our amazement when the game was cancelled because Falmouth Town couldn't raise a team !.
We know that this was a friendly game that because it was a friendly will be labeled as nonessential, but if a club the size and stature of Falmouth are finding it difficult to raise a team at this stage of next seasons preperations, the commitment needed to continue last seasons success will be needed throughout the club which of course will be supported by the inclusion of a successful and reliable 2nd team.
As a side note we learnt last season to always check the status of a match before traveling, which saved us a few miles detour on the journey to Penxzance.

Happens regularly for psf's, plus this year the friendlies are a touch on the early side to say the least.

Time with the family to score some points at this time of the year, holidays, part time work and so on impacts on player availability.

Ridiculous excuses 🤦‍♂️

Falmouth (Big Club) propaganda was splashed on this forum on a regular basis last season, now they can't even get a side together for an arranged pre season fixture?

The vast majority of other clubs managed to get sides together yesterday without weak claims of family-time & holidays 🤪

We're talking about a Western League club who couldn't raise a 2nd team side to play a prearranged game of pre season football.

If this attitude is replecated and accepted as normal throughout Cornwall, then football as a whole will suffer in the county.

The Sticker v Falmoth 2nds match is no different to any other match that is cancelled because of the lack of commitment of players, what surprised us was that the premier club in last seasons SWPL was unable to raise a team

It is only beginning of July these players are not premiership players getting paid.  It’s a boiling hot day. Most probably gone beach or out with the family rather then run around roasting hot weather in a pointless Friendly .
right or wrong that is the way it is unfortunately it’s only hobby for the lads.

Falmouth first team is a slightly different story as they are stepping up so probably need more commitment

Presuming that no one was forced to agree to play football and assuming that the possibility of it being a boiling hot day was always a known possibility, why agree to playing in the first place.
Arranging a friendly on 9th July for a season that begins at Liskeard on 2nd August doesn't seem too early to us. the simple thing is not to arrange matches that you can't put out a team for and for whatever reason.
Can't agree that freindlies are a pointless function for a club, whoever they are the manager needs to get his team in to playing condition.
As stated already we are not taking issue with any particular club, rather the seemingly lackadaisical  attitude taken by clubs where frendlies are concerned.
We agree that we are not talking about Premiership players, but commitment to the cause is paramount in any sport that can breed success at any level.

Seems the Falmouth first team were 5 or 6 short too against Truro according to their fans. Seems strange that the biggest club in the county would suffer in such a way.

It does seem to be getting earlier and earlier pre season. No wonder players are losing interest. Hardly any break at all.
as I mentioned you have players with kids or families or young lads that see thier mates off out  for day

these cancellations will happen.
and not to mention the cost of fuel etc to get to these games

Correct Bash ! Luckily we don't have a player swap arrangement with another club . Hence some of the 2nd team stepped up to play  for the 1rst team as it should be and therefore left the 2nd team short and unable to fulfill the sticker fixture .Players are entitled to holidays just like you and me with only a small window to take them in .i also understand there was a sickness element as well .Better they miss a pre season friendly than a league / cup game.

I can imagine the up roar on here if we had cancelled the 1rst team fixture against Truro due to player unavailability .People would have been spouting off " But they have a reserve team why didn't use some of them " We did do that but alas that's not right either ,you can't have it both ways my friend .

Will need seriously looking at by the leagues and clubs. Only thing that early starts and minimum break between seasons is player burnout and injuries added with loss of interest by the time the season arrives.
why is the season starting on august 2nd ? Surly the toward end of august was always the start??

All to do with the world Cup in November apparently. 🤔

It’s not about players being called up, it’s players going to the pub on the lash to watch games instead of playing. Gives the leagues and clubs leeway for cancellations. Sensible planning by the administration for this season in my opinion.

when FIFA allowed money to dictate a winter World Cup it’s bound to effect all football

I know many people have been caught out this year with summer events being cancelled from last year ie weddings, holidays, music/theatre trips, big birthdays, visiting family members and being re-scheduled this year, and people forgetting all about it, and if they cancel they lose their money. Everything seems to be jammed 2 months before the football season starts. I think it’s a communication issue, as a manager/club just can’t assume these days that players will be automatically available for a friendly organised in early July. What’s embarrassing is when a professional club like Plymouth Argyle couldn’t fulfil a couple of reserve team fixtures a few years ago. Plus, it’s interesting that some big local teams haven’t got a reserve team, but it’s nice to see Bodmin Town set up a reserve team this year. Best of luck to them.

In the light of the comments on this thread that condem what is perceived as an early start, with no regard given to the wellbeing of players who need family time, beach time and run a risk of preseason burnout, the following question comes to mind.
Who are the people who arrange these games, is it club managers who need to see their squad play, or club committes who hope for some financial benefit from the attendance of  supporters.
Whoever arranges the games it must be with the full knowledge of the clubs concerned who must field the blame for not considering the players availability for all the reasons listed above !

Perhaps it’s something you should look at then?? Who organised the fixtures then? Surely you make sure you have the players available before you accept the fixture. Come on, you’re in the big boy league now Nigel so let’s start acting like big boys!! Hope that pedestal isn’t too high for you F Troop 🤣🤣🤣

How is it a pointless post?

It’s preseason. It’s early. Maybe it would be better to make contact with someone to check it’s on. It’s good weather players have a life too. It’s a pointless post moaning about a friend not being on who actually cares?

Not really a pointless post. Imagine the guys at Sticker who had agreed a home game a few weeks ago to help both teams preparations for the 2022/23 season. They would have prepared the pitch, arranged officials and after match hospitality !! Poor show on Falmouth.

Imagine the guys at sticker enjoying the weather yesterday with family and friends as they had a free Saturday. 😂😂😂

It appears that no one is likely to take responsibility for arranging a match that doesn't take place because of player unavailability, we just hope that the same players who were unavailable in any cancelled friendly matches, realise that the club they represent could face financial penalties or loss of points  if they cry off and a league game has to be cancelled.
Football matters aside we have enjoyed our weekend jaunt to Penzance, the cancelled game cost us nothing, but it's worth clubs noting what the value of commitment can be to their success.

But this is a friendly so who actually cares. You had a lovely detour down to lovely Penzance. Perfect weather for it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your games down there this year half penzance half helston pulling the shirt on this year.

Reading all these sob-story, hardship & early season trauma tales from the Falmouth Appreciation Society perhaps they should consider winding-in their weekly broadcasts of what a BIG club they are 🤦‍♂️

It's rather embarrassing when a self labelled Galactico Club can't shuffle a side together for a pre planned kick about at Sticker 🥴

It's not a sob story, it's the facts.  As was stated above, the first team was short and the reserves stepped up, that's what reserve teams are for.  It's early in the football year and players will be unavailable for a number of reasons.  We know that other clubs have had to cancel PSFs, it's not ideal, but that's life.  It's not a decision that would have been taken lightly and before you ask, yes I do feel sorry for Sticker.  As for the "Galactico Club" comment, I think that's way out of line.

You don't need 16 players for a friendly if it means leaving the 2nds short surely

Makes one wonder why they agreed to a Reserve fixture the same day? Especially if half the first team prefer sitting on a beach or shopping with their partners 🥴

Way too many scheduled games being called off in the area this season.

Doesn't help clubs who are genuinely serious about turning up, nor football supporters, some of whom may have wasted petrol for nothing.

Way, way too early for Pre-season games, no wonder people are losing interest! Do a little training regularly through July and then have 2 or 3 pre season matches early August and you should be fine. Even more reason to take it easy as people are just working more and more and a lot harder, especially the younger generation trying to get on the housing ladder. I watched a few minutes of a Trelawney league club first and reserves train a few nights ago, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and especially hearing, it was like some sort of boot camp.  Realism is key if you want to attract and keep players, especially at levels below SWPL!!!!

I don't fully understand the comments about friendlies being too early, a little training in July and 2 or 3 warm up matches in August has been suggested. To the best of my knowledge, first league SWPL fixtures are the first week in August when teams need to be up and running to surely get points on the board !!

Lets hope that none of the lads have any aspirations to join any of the professional clubs, current opinion suggests that the shock would be too much!😅

lets be frank, if they were aspiring to be at a professional club, they wouldnt be mixing it in the SWPL. If they are good enough, would have been snapped up at an early age by an academy
