Les Phillips Cup - Results 24 & 25 October 2023

Recommended Posts

The F-Troop were in fine voice last night, creating a decent atmosphere in bleak weather.

As fair as entertainment, that was as good as it got.

Falmouth Town were woeful last night, played an awful lot of long balls after stringing several passes between the back line.  With them desperately lacking an out and out striker, it didn't suit what so ever and young Harrison Jewell and the Bentley brothers ate it up all evening.

I'm sure they will bounce back in the league and get back on track and be there or there about.

My first time taking in Falmouth this season. Got there for the warm up, weather was pretty miserable!  Didn’t realise it was Falmouth’s first choice keeper in goal! Didn’t look great in the warm up and I’m sure he’s had better games, the defence just didn’t seem to trust him.

Helston we’re lucky to get away without a couple of early bookings from the referee one for pulling the Falmouth player away from taking a quick throw which is probably the most blatant booking I’ve seen for a while. This then allowed further time wasting and play acting that wasn’t addressed by the referee on any occasion.  First booking came from the softest challenge made by Reid!

Both goals could easily have been prevented.  Falmouth never really threatened shots on target apart from a few scrambled in the second half.

Who have Helston got in the next Round ?-This cup is so regionalised   probably St.Blazey/Saltash

In the other part of the WL region The Les Phillips Cup incorporates clubs fro Western League Division 1 for variety.

What was the gate last night ?as last season the two clubs met on 5 occasions with The Blues winning 3 and one drawn with this local Derby attracting 2.500 in total.

Taking in the weather, I was pleasantly surprised with numbers in attendance (& voice) id say 250+ easily (would like to know exactly also)

Was under the impression that the referee had forgot his cards or they were to wet to get out of his pocket, until (correctly said) the very soft caution to *Wilson of Helston.

The Helston midfield did the 'nasty/dirty' stuff right all game and were lucky to escape sanction for persistent offending.

Top sh*thousery from their GK all game, getting on the wrong side of the F-Troop 🤣

Was the Helston GK Kyle Moore? He could start an argument in an empty room. 😁

Its was.  He laid down after collecting every ball, had treatment on a mystery 'injury' 2/3 times.  Switched side of the 6 yard box for every goal kick, appealed for a foul throw for every single Falmouth throw in. (the classics)

Was well liked by the F-Troop as you can imagine 😆

Falmouth Town 0. Helston 2.

Falmouth Town bowed out of this season’s Les Phillips Cup with a 2-0 defeat to the current holders, and local rivals, Helston Athletic at a rainy Bickland Park on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of around 400.

Both teams fielded some changes from recent games. Falmouth were without Ollie Walker, Jack Webber and Bradley Leivers with last years player of the season Tom Annear starting from the bench. Helston started with Jordan Copp, Curtis Damerell and Tom Payne on the bench with ex-Town favourite Tom Moxham absent also.

Falmouth started brightly and dominated the possession, a pattern that was mirrored for the vast majority of the game.  Helston seemed content to defend and then get the ball forward early when able.

With the game being dominated by Falmouth, Helston launched the ball forward in the 13th minute.  In a moment similar to the previous Town home game, there was some miscommunication between Coxhead in the Town goal and the Falmouth defence as Coxhead raced off his line to clear. Instead the ball was poked past him and it rolled into the back of the net with Coxhead stranded.

After forcing a series of corners, Falmouth swung one over from the left on 25 minutes and it was met by James Ward at the far post, only to see his header hit the bar and be subsequently cleared away.  2 minutes later, Jacob Grange, playing down the right for Falmouth, jinked inside and hit a rising shot which just cleared the bar.

On 44 minutes, Helston mounted a rare attack and won a corner. It was delivered from the left and Aaron Bentley arrived at the far post to power a header into the net to make it 2-0 to Helston.

Half-time: FalmouthTown 0. Helston 2.

The second half continued much as the first half with Town having most of the ball but Helston defending well and mopping up all the pressure.  Town were playing in front of the Helston defence but were struggling to get through them or in behind them. It was a classic Attack v. Defence and Helston came out on top.

On 49 minutes, after further Town pressure, the ball broke to Jacob Grange just inside the box, but he saw his effort frustratingly hit the woodwork and rebound to safety.  No luck for Falmouth when they needed it most.

Changes ensued as the game wore on with Tom Annear coming on for Max Everall on 62 minutes, as Falmouth changed to 3 at the back. The promising Tom Fisher then replaced James Swann in the 67th minute who had moved into midfield after Annear’s introduction.  Fisher didn’t look at all out of place in such a big game and retained the ball well when required. Cam Hutchison replaced Jacob Grange at the same time and moved in to the #10 role, Luke Barner then moving to a wide-left position. This change seemed to rejuvenate Town as Barner started running at Tyler Elliott, the Helston right-back, time and again getting to the by-line and crossing into the box.  However, the Town forwards were not able to get in front of their defenders and Helston cleared comfortably on most occasions.

In summary, a great defensive performance from Helston against a Falmouth side who out-played their top of the table opponents but just did not have enough in the final third to make good the damage done by their earlier defensive errors.

Man of the Match for Falmouth was Andreas Caleja-Stayne who worked tirelessly in the heavy conditions making crucial tackles and driving Town forwards from midfield with his sound distribution and ball-carrying.

Falmouth move on to a very difficult tie at Barnstaple on Saturday in the league as they push for a play-off place.  Helston have a tough trip to Buckland.

Helston’s’ squad is extremely experienced at this and higher levels of football, so when Helston gain promotion (I think they should with the squad they have) they should be well set up for the next level. Unlike St Blazey, who got a squad together to obtain promotion, but had to re-group for the Western League. TBH, local teams like St Blazey, Saltash, Falmouth and Millbrook (last season) are punching above their weight when they beat teams like Bridgwater, Buckland, Helston, Barnstaple, and deserve all the credit they get at the time 👏

So to sum up, Helston were clinical and Falmouth huffed and puffed after a ****-up and a lucky goal??🤔🤣🤔🤣

First one was luck no question, against the run of play and a mix up between the GK & defender.  Second was as described a bullet header.

Falmouth look to be in desperate need of a 20+ goal striker, few & fair between.  Although Helston potentially boast x3 💪

This season  Falmouth have scored 40 goals from 18 games and incredibly from 16 different scorers (plus own goals)-Leading scorer Cam Hutchison 7 goals.

Oscar Massey was targeted from Penzance but    travels to Barnstaple  where he has hit the net running.

I'm Taking nothing away from what the team have/are achieving @Mike Odgers, just from my observations the young lad who has operated through the middle & Brabyn when in the same position lack that presence in the box and ability to hold the ball up and 'bully' a defender, an 'old school' striker if you may. (all of course, just my opinion)

Not disagreeing with what you're saying regarding Town needing a focal point on their attack, but it was only a few weeks ago that they were attracting plaudits for their style of play and that they were sharing the goals around. Just a couple of "off games", or been worked out?  Time will tell I guess.

Great match report Scotty.

Congratulations to Helston on their victory. From our point of view with about 70% possession we should have done better in the final 3rd no question. We gave away 2 sloppy goals, hit the woodwork on a couple of occasions and never took advantage. Helston defended great withstanding wave after wave of Towns attacks and they coped really well.

Our focus is now on the weekends tough fixture away at Barnstaple. WE ALL LOVE FALMOUTH TOWN.

If, not when, Helston go up. A fair chance they will do it, but far from a given!

Very true, but based upon the experience and quality of their squad,  compared to other squads in the league they should deliver like Mousehole did last season. Plus, like Mousehole, any long term injuries/or unavailability to important players during the season would be quickly replaced with like for like quality if needed, permanently or on a temporary basis.

Let’s face it if there’s a title challenge Helston certainly have the coins to attract players for the final push if needed too.

I think their squad currently is more than capable of running away with it, but they’ll be able to add extra players if needed.

St Blazey 1 Saltash 5

Les Phillips Cup - Wednesday 25 October

It was an emphatic win last night at Blaise Park for the young Ashes.

The opening 30-35 minutes were a pretty even affair, with chances few and far between. The first real opportunity fell to Jordan Ewing, who should’ve converted an unmarked header from a Saltash corner. Duffey at the other end was later forced into a couple smart saves to keep the tie goalless.

The opening goal was very well taken by Aaron Goulty - his first in an Ashes shirt, who controlled well on the edge of the box to precisely finish left footed past Semmens from 20 yards.

Just minutes after the restart, Blazey were awarded a penalty and a chance to pull level. Isaac McCue stepped up, but his tame effort was held by Duffey low to his right.

That proved to be the decisive moment, as from there on, the Ashes took complete control of this tie - just four minutes after the penalty miss, Aaron Goulty got his second goal and doubled the lead for the visitors.

Joe Preece added a third in the 58th minute - Love-Holmes a clear yard or two offside in the buildup, but not to matter, as the in form Jordan Ewing added 2 more in as many minutes, and the tie was put to bed.

A late consolation goal for Blazey from Saltash Reserves’ Ben Waters pulled one back. Vocal support from the travelling Saltash supporters made for a decent atmosphere.

Helston travel to Kimberley on Tuesday, 21 November, 19:30 kick off.

Funny old game as someone once said.

Since Saltash beat St Blazey they've been knocked out of two other cups and lost both league games scoring just once.

St Blazey won their senior cup tie and picked up 4 points from two games and scored 11 goals in those 3 games.

Wouldn't have predicted that after that mid week Les Phillips cup tie.
