Launceston 9, Sticker 1

A fully deserved win for the Clarets with Gary Jeffery back as manager.

The far better side against a Sticker side that struggled to string too much together. Dan Hart opened the scoring for Launceston after 14 minutes when I thought his shot perhaps could have been saved down low at the near post by Sticker keeper Anton Lake.

Lake was in for a busy night and generally did ok on his league debut for his new club.

Despite Launceston having more of the game they didn’t get their second until the 32nd minute when the lively Morgan Parsonage was gifted the ball in the visitors penalty area and made no mistake hammering the ball in from inside the penalty area.

Three minutes later Hart and Billy Hopcroft played a short corner and with only one Sticker defender trying to close them down, Hopcroft was allowed to advance towards goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net to open his account for the season. I thought Billy looked sharp and he’ll cause a lot of defences big, big problems on this showing.

3-0 at the break it was going to be interesting to see if Sticker could do anything with a very strong wind behind them in the second half.

Unfortunately within five minutes of the second half they went a further goal behind when an unchallenged run by Hopcroft into the Sticker box wasn’t stopped and the ball fell to Tom Ellacott to touch home from close range.

Just pass the hour central defender Matt Thackery headed home a Charlie Hardcastle corner and then a minute later with Parsonage claiming his second and making it 6-0 with still almost half an hour to play, I think most of us feared the worst for the visitors!

Another assist from Hardcastle came five minutes later for Hopcroft’s second to increase their lead to 7-0, but a total misclearance by Launceston’s goally and club captain Josh Colwill in the 72th minute did at least get Sticker on the scoresheet. Big No.9 Joel Cockings made the most of having all but an open goal to aim at!

That mistake disturbed Launceston’s attacking mood for a short while and probably prevented any double figure scoreline. They did notch two more however as Hopcroft secured his hat-trick with a brute force shot from close in which gave Lake no chance, even though he was right behind the ball. It was just hit far too powerfully to be stopped!

Substitute Trav Skerton got what proved to be the last goal of a one-sided game in the 88th minute.

Manager Jeffery suggested on the RAPPO & DEACS weekly podcast this week that his side has a way to go yet before being the finished item, however on this display, they should win a lot more than they lose!

Incorrect.  Clubs that don't meet the requirements have until 2021 to get their facilities up to standard.

Still due to facilities, Steve, even worse if they are not yet completed. You seem entirely to miss the point that playing standards are not necessarily relevant.

No not at all, I certainly do get your point about playing standards.  Given the degree of restructuring a wide range was always going to be unavoidable and I think thats been raised a number of times over the last few months.

The point I was making was that unless facilities clearly couldn't be brought up to standard they wouldn't have been deal breakers.  And the FA have make significant grants available to invest in club facilities.

It's certainly going to be an interesting season across all of the leagues after all of the upheaval but all we can do is make the best of it.

Onwards and upwards - enjoy the season!
