Pitches that slope seem more robust with this recent wet weather. Does having a slope help them to drain better?

Harrison and I visited Poltair Park yesterday to watch Bude pit their wits against one of the leagues strongest teams and I have to say, did very well indeed.
The pitch looked in decent condition considering all the rain we have had.
There was a real strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch from corner flag to corner flag and it aided the team kicking with it.
That team was Bude in the first half and they certainly had the bulk of possession in the first half, they created some half chances but for me, never really looked like scoring. St Austell playing into the wind has less of the ball but did manage to create a couple of chances from crosses into the box, but never really troubled Hill in the Bude goal. A good half from Budes point of view as they continue to build a nice controlled brand of football in which they play out from the back and aim to pass through teams. That said, they will, and do, hit the odd long ball if an opening presents itself.
The second half saw a more dominant St Austell however it was Bude with the opening goal as the lively Keates drove home a strike. St Austell responded a few minutes later as a more direct approach was causing problems for the Bude defence and a ‘wind assisted’ ball over the top allowed Carter in to beat the goalkeeper to the ball and tap home.  The home team now with a clear plan to take advantage of the weather took the game to Bude and were rewarded with another Carter goal as he stooped low to head in a cross from the right and put the home team in front for the first time.
As the game was nearing the final 5 minutes St Austell and Carter added a 3rd and the hope was that Bude would not let the heads drop and concede more as that would have been a really unfair reflection on a competitive game. Thankfully this Bude team are building a real can do attitude and kept at their hosts and deserved the opportunity to pull a goal back from a smashing free kick on the edge of the box. Harry Hopcroft beating the wall and the keeper with a low drive into the bottom corner.
A really competitive game, played in good spirit. Only sour note for me was a Bude red card which was never a red. Should have been a yellow, but the ref is a bit closer than me, so who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

Harrison also got to meet Smokey for the first time. And what a lovely old chap he is.

Bude are building a decent team for next season. Hopefully, we can keep the bulk of this squad together and continue the progression which is clear for all to see.

Went to St Austell this afternoon bit breezy but quite pleasant , St Austell where poor in the 1st half and Bude deserved there lead given to them by Ryan Keats after a mix up in the goalmouth and St Austell Goalie  Andrew Collins was well beaten by Ryan KEATS for a excellent finish to put Bude 1-0 up

My favourite player Adam Carter was having a quiet game but that was soon to change with mistakes from the Bude defence Carters 2nd goal 1 on 1 with Bude goalie only going to be one winner and Adam beat Liam Hill with ease , Carter was after his hattrick and you would put money on him getting it and he gets yet another hat trick just as well give him the golden boot now because no one will catch him hes just a brilliant striker on the same as Mark Rappo Rapsey but Marks goals where scored on mudbath pitches and the balls where a lot harder then pigs bladder i think and hob nailed boots he wore ,seriously pity he wasnt playing these days he would give Carter a run for his money .

Bude played some lovely football and the new signing No9 Kevin Lartey was very good they certainly didnt deserve to loose but if you make mistakes with Adam Carter around you will be punished .

Bude still had time to score the final goal a brilliant free kick from Captain Harry Hopcroft .

Mom For St Austell got to be Adam Carter and for Bude Kevin Lartey

The referee and his 2 officials where excellent 1 being Graham Rickard who never has a bad game ok im a bit biased he use to be my sons manager when he played for the Newquay Youth Centre team .

I will predict Liskeard will beat St Austell on Tuesday and will also get promoted for the simple reason St Austells brilliant goalie Harry Ashton is out injured and he cant be replaced . So Liskeard see you up Newquay next Saturday hope Newquay give you a decent game you never know which Newquay team turns up

Smokie said it was lovely to meet Harrison but doesnt like being called old chap he rather be called mature hes 12 years old and his not going to give up his crown as the top dog in the South west .Look forward to seeing you again Scott and Harrison of cause

Cheers Steve, you’re not wrong mate!! We never had a game called off back in those days! Lovely ankle deep mud and the old Mitre Multiplex match ️ balls! You wouldn’t want one of them in the old trossocks on a cold wet day! Agree with you about Carts, always in the right place at the right time and more often than not produces the finish. I was SWL top scorer 3 times and if not for the bloody injuries would have definitely had another one, probably two, I think Carts is up around that already Steve, definitely a better target man than I ever was that’s for sure! My best days were probably from 19 to 26 when i had the pace Steve, had to start changing my game about 28 after a couple of broken feet!! Probably became a poor man’s version of Carts after that! Some great competition back then though, Steve Massey, Bradley Swiggs, Graham Nicholls, Andy Waddell, Glynn Hooper, etc etc etc the list goes on really so consider myself proud to have won the Jack Hawke Trophy 3 times to be honest! By the way, does anyone know where that massive old Jack Hawke Trophy is!? Me and Deacs are looking for it!! Reward for the person who finds it!! 👍🤓. Hope you and my old pal Smokie are doing well Steve, hopefully catch you at a game before the end of the season mate 👍

Big game this weekend Mark Newquay vs Liskeard Going to be a hard game with Newquay Centre half out for the season , but looking forward the the best free kick Specialists in the league in Cam Turner and Max Gilbert . You must of got a lot of Match Balls in your time for the hat tricks you got defenders where tougher and dirtier in your days . See you at a match before the end of the season i expect mate

Yeah Max and Cam brilliant from set pieces ain’t they Steve and both great lads too 👍👏🏼️ enjoy watching both those boys. Yeah you’re spot on mate, I don’t think many defenders back then would make it to half time these days!! Pretty scary experience being a young striker playing against the likes of Roy May, Nigel Menhennick, Richard Gibbons, Mike Honey etc etc the list goes on!!! Even gentlemen like Tommy and Toffee who were brilliant and hard and fair you could pick up a few cuts and bruises from!! Certainly toughened you up though else you wouldn’t survive in the old SWL!!! Great days despite the knackered shins every week! I might not be crippled if I played today Steve! Strikers certainly get a bit more protection these days which is a good thing!! Should be a great end to the season if the rain ever stops!! Liskeard & St.Austell going for the league and got to meet in a senior cup semi, two of our Cornish clubs Falmouth & Helston battling it out for the Western league, Mousehole in with a great chance of Southern league play offs, and Truro looking good to stay in the National league South, just be nice if we had a couple dry days!!! Think I remember one at the end of January!!! Enjoy the rest of the season Steve, all the best mate 👍

Awful weather again will it ever stop raining , Liskeard got to be favourites for the league now that St Austell have there brilliant goalie out injured and could be the season .

Liskeard have so many good players and i see Dylan Peels is back playing brilliant player looking forward to seeing Louis PRICE against him on Saturday but Newquay will be missing there brilliant defender Matt out for the season so that will be a big lost in the centre of the defence so i expect Moxham will play in the centre of defence and young Ryan Beer will be brought in whoever plays they will have there work cut out vs ,Jennings , Smith and now Charlie Young signed from Wendron and hes started scoring goals for Liskeard now .

Dont think Liskeard have got a weakness in there team really enjoy watching them with Max Gilbert with his range of passes and free kick but we have our own pass master and free kick expert the Mighty Cam Turner .

Cant see tmmrws Liskeard vs St Austell game being on with all this rain

Press Release from Graham Hambly

Issued – April 7, 2024

Bishops Lydeard 0, Ivybridge Town 2

IVYBRIDGE Town clinched the East Division championship of the South West Peninsula League with their 2-0 away win over Bishops Lydeard on Saturday (April 6).

They took a fifth minute lead with a shot from Bailey Mabin and wrapped up the victory when Chris Wright scored with an excellent free kick in the 86th minute.

This was the 24th win in 28 league matches for Ivybridge, who secured the title with four games to spare.

The latest success was even more impressive as it came without key defenders Scott Pocock and Jordan Powell.

Jacob Smelt took over the captaincy in the absence of Pocock as Ivybridge re-organised their defence with Smelt joining Josh Zimmerman, returning from injury, and Curtis Legrice in a three-man rearguard.

Ivybridge joint manager Lance Bailey explained: “The decision to award the captaincy to Jacob was a reward for the hard work he has put in over the season.”

The early goal for Ivybridge came as they made a bright start, but they did not have it all their own way as Bishops Lydeard battled back into the game.

“Bishops Lydeard worked hard and showed why they have not conceded many goals at home,” said Bailey.

“Although we created some chances, things were not quite going for us until we got the second goal with a great free kick from Chris Wright.”

Ivybridge have a blank day this Saturday (April 13) but then face three home games in five days, starting with a return fixture against Bishops Lydeard on Tuesday April 16 (7.45).

Then comes a clash against Okehampton on Thursday April 18 (7.30) and Ivybridge will complete their home fixtures with a visit from Crediton on Saturday April 20 (3.0) when Peninsula League officials will be at Erme Valley for the presentation of the championship trophy.

The final league fixture of the season will be away to Okehampton on Saturday April 27.

Looking at that run of fixtures, Bailey said: “We have a bit of a rest next week, but then we will look to finish the season on a strong note. We might have secured the championship, but we still have our targets. We have a winning mentality and will not look to sit on our laurels.”

Following the completion of their league programme, Ivybridge will face the West Division champions, who are likely to be St Austell or Liskeard, in the Champions Bowl fixture at Launceston on the evening of Wednesday May 1.

Carts has his strengths and his record speaks for itself. However, racking up goals in todays weakened  SWPL - W not quite the achievement it once was.

For example at Step 5 or 6 level , I rate Ryan Richard’s or Sam Hughes when at Saltash as better all round strikers / players.

They need to find a striker who will get 20 goals or more wonder if Adam Carter or Jaffa Rowe fancy a change of scenary or maybe Liam Eddy , if they had a good Centre Forward you could be right Wetsuit but thats what is missing from the team

Of course Newquay should get promotion within the next  couple of years or so, as  t then, they will be one of the few ‘bigger’ SWPL  sides not to have tasted Step 5 football in recent times.

I see St Dennis v Camelford off tonight despite the bright weather and 7 more hours to ko.

I know weather has been shocking but they still have 7 home fixtures due to cancellations. Apparently they have severe drainage problems and maybe a spring under the pitch.

They are a great club with hardworking volunteers but would it not be a good idea to think about reversing venues to help them fulfil their fixtures?

You do realise that with all the rain over the last few months that the ground is well and truly saturated. Launceston were meant to host a match tonight which is off so it's not just a St Dennis problem.

  • Dave Deacon changed the title to RESULTS - Saturday 6th through to Thursday 11th April 2024

Liskeard seem to be experiencing a bit of a wobble at present, and not for the first time suffered from a lack of discipline that on this occasion left them playing almost half a match with 10 men.
Aggression and a certain amount of arrogance is part and parcel of the game that is mostly acceptable unless it's over the limit and costs your team points.
The further up the pyramid you travel, teams who have players who have a short fuse or are over aggressive, will always find that those players are identified by their opponents and their faults are played on and exposed to the referees notebook.

Newquay are not a team that is easily overcome and to have to do it a man short is asking a lot, and so the return match at Mount Wise on Saturday will give Liskeard the chance to show us what might have been.
We did however enjoy the game and thank Liskeards groundstaff for providing a match to watch.

Liskeard nearly always crumple when under pressure. St Austell could well steal the promotion spot now.

No match reports on Newquays fine win against Liskeard i will alter that on Saturday when i will be up Mt Wise watching the match . I saw Max Gilbert was sent off for Liskeard i saw him sent off earlier in the season at Wadebridge which was very harsh im hoping Max plays at Newquay hes 1 of the best players in the league and his passing is brilliant as is Cam Turner .

Should be a good game but its so unfair by the fa some teams having to play 3 matches in a week and these lads works as well and then to play a match after they have done a hard days work is not right some lads are builders and that is expecting a lot to them having to go and play a match the FA needs to extend the league until middle of May you had Truro the other night playing 2 games in a row that is so wrong even though it was 2 different teams .

Should be a good crowd up Newquay tmmrw and the weather is forcast dry and Sunny so no excuses but both teams will be tired after Thursdays match expect changes for both teams i reckon Borthwick will be in goal for Liskeard and Mike Smith will replace Charlie Young up front havnt a clue on Newquay dont know what team played the other night  .

Normally suspensions don’t start to 7 days later, meaning he is available Saturday and his ban will start next Thursday, if it was a straight Red should be a 3 game ban which I think gets upgraded to a 4 match ban if he has already been sent off earlier in the season.

Correct on both counts.

"Suspensions commence automatically on the 7th day following the match in which the Player was dismissed."

"Players who are dismissed on more than one occasion during the Season will receive an automatic additional match ban."
