Starting to bite

Recommended Posts

I know it is not Southern League but it is the next up, National League North, Hereford, my home side.

Things are biting and money is getting tight. Two years ago, 1300 season tickets sold, last year 1100. This year with an early bird scheme the have sold up to today 800. Prices from £40 for a wee kiddy to £515 in the Executive Club.

Prices from now on will be 10% higher.

They know they are going to be short cash-wise and have launched a Squad Builder fund through the 400 members of the Supporters Trust. Trying to raise an extra £50,000 from us. So far we have coughed up £22,000 with the rest of the summer break to find the rest. Pop concerts, boxing competitions, etc to raise cash.

Luckily we are still raising to buy the club outright, £289,000 in shares and we are £15,000 shy having to find that by next May.

But it's not cheap running a club at that level. Trying to get in as many loanees as possible and use 7 of last season's under 18's on cheap contracts.

515 quid for football that is not even in the league below EFL 2!!! No wonder they’re struggling to sell tickets. Would suggest many EFL 1 teams are cheaper than that. Unrealistic aspirations or bad house keeping seems to be at fault there.

These prices will continue  to rise

clubs will be hit by same energy rise costs food costs etc and staff cost as all of us.  fuel costs alone will see some of these long coach journeys costing fortune.
it maybe time to look at the ridiculous money paid out to players in lower leagues as a better cost saving measure.
some clubs carry 18-20 players a good lot on 200-350 a game. Absolutely crazy.
only on a thread for the peninsula league there a player rumoured to be on 250 a game. It literally can’t last

back to the days when players had expenses for travel and 20 quid to spend in the club house after

Also have to think that even if takings through the gate hold steady, will people's discretionary spend at the ground go down (food, drink, 50/50), and will it also become harder for clubs to find sponsorship as businesses pull the belts in?

Day of reckoning coming for some clubs, but then I've thought that for a while.

For context, found a few lines in an old Liskeard Athletic program from the 83/84 season where they are critical of Falmouth's decision to withdraw from the Western League (especially as Town thought that Liskeard and Saltash would follow). The writer was of the opinion that, "Falmouth should cut their cloth accordingly, like we have had to."

Falmouth Town withdrew from the league??? Their committed fans on here missed that out every time we were given chapter and verse of their roll of honour as the best club in the world. Was that about the same time that all their fans went missing and the ground was a tip??🤔🤔🤔🤔😎😎😎😎

Better to take a step back and save the club.  Falmouth Town weren't the first club to do it and sadly won't be the last.  The bottom line is the bottom line and remember this salient fact, clubs with big money backers (whoever they may be) aren't immune, one need only look at Rushden & Diamonds.

That's an interesting point when, in a football context, you consider the rising cost of living has become more and more apparent at the very time people are renewing season tickets. But it's possible that, with 'early bird' deals encouraging supporters to purchase sooner and sooner, clubs may have sold the majority of their season tickets just in time. Another few months and the picture may have been different.

We'll soon start to get an overall view. Exeter City announced 3,100 season tickets sold by the start of June - up from 1,700 last season (the impact of Covid on that figure being hard to judge of course) - but they're on the crest of a wave. It may have been a  harder sell where things are flatter.

Hereford are also in the situation, like all clubs at National North/South level, of having to sell two extra home games as the leagues grow from 22 to 24 clubs.

The new Hereford club has done incredibly well since formation. Three championships in successive seasons; they reached their current level as quickly as they could. An improved season last time, after all the interuptions, looks pretty good to me but is it a little dull for some after all the early excitement? I imagine expectation and perception are quite an issue where a new club has replaced an older one which has played at a higher level.

Geography doesn't help at step 2. It's unlikely anybody would suggest a single national league at that level but for Hereford - and other clubs in their league south of Birmingham - the amount of travelling in National North can't be too different from what it might be in a single division. Might also Hereford's current north league present something of a "marketing" issue? Look at the map and it could be a while before the recent changes at step 3 have the relegation/promotion impact required to pull Hereford south.
