Truro City Reserves 5 Sticker 3

Sticker struck first inside the first 10 minutes, when the Truro captain, Jamie Edlin, gave away a free-kick in the left back position. The ball was crossed into the box and Sticker captain, Mickey Rowles-Jane headed the bouncing ball against the bar, only for Ovo Emmerurai to bundle home the rebound. 10 minutes later, Truro were back on level terms, when Rowles-Jane fouled a Truro player inside the box, leaving Fin Harrison to send the Sticker keeper, Ethan Elwell, the wrong way from the spot. Truro's number 7 Teddy Horton (who had a great long throw), was booked for a foul midway through the half. The home side took the lead when a shot on the left by Josh Marcelis was parried by the Sticker keeper, and Ben Shaw tapped the ball home. Truro increased their lead when a free kick from the left was headed home, by the unopposed Edlin. Just before the break Truro increased their lead, when a quick free-kick was played to unmarked Horton and he cut inside and finished well, with the ball going in off the far post. 4-1 to the home side at halftime.

Sticker knew that they needed to start the second half well to have any chance of getting back into the game, and they initially had the territorial advantage, without really creating anything. They did get a goal back when a cross found it's way to  Josh Margetts, who slotted home. Then things started to get really interesting when Emmerurai tapped home from a few yards out. Truro led 4-3, and were on the backfoot, but they responded in the best way possible by restoring their 2 goal lead with their next attack. A long throw found its way to Lawson Turpin, who finished well on the half volley. That goal finished off the scoring, to deservedly leave Truro victorious by 5 goals to 3.

It was a decent game, played out with 2 teams made up mainly of younger players. The referee and his assistants had good games, and I was impressed with the set-up at Tregye.

PENZANCE 0 ST AUSTELL 4

St Austell became only the second side to defeat Penzance on their own patch in the league this season, a salvo of three goals inside eight first half minutes pushing the Lillywhites a little closer to table-toppers Liskeard Athletic whose fixture at St Dennis was postponed.

With veteran centre-back Mark Vercesi and midfield dynamo Charlie Willis missing, Penzance were always going to be up against it. Unlucky goalkeeper Mikey Flores then broke an arm – for the third time in just fifteen months – in training, further depleting resources.

However, after a cagey opening the Magpies threatened first with Jacob Trudgeon (twice) and Ollie Butler seeing shots blocked during a frantic mele inside the St Austell area. The visitors signalled their intent with Adam Carter curling a shot just over, and it was the big striker who broke the deadlock after 26 minutes, towering at the back post to head home a George Marris corner.

Penzance’s best move of the match followed immediately afterwards, James Butler brilliantly setting up Tyler Tonkin. But the home captain saw his shot pushed aside by Harry Ashton and within a few short minutes St Austell were two up with an absolute carbon copy of their first goal, Carter again despatching a Marris corner from the right.

With a skilfully curled left-foot strike, full-back Jake Shaw effectively wrapped up the win for the Lillywhites as the interval approached. Penzance, rallied somewhat after the break, but the better chances still fell to the visitors with only the woodwork denying Carter a hat-trick, and Will Trenoweth saving well from Liam Eddy.

A nasty elbow injury saw Liam Andrew withdrawn after an hour, and Penzance finished the match with several players operating in unaccustomed positions, and four under-18s on the pitch. Two fine saves by Trenoweth from visiting captain Neil Slateford in the final ten minutes limited St Austell to just one further goal – a cracking angled drive by substitute Connor Wharton.

“Today we played a side who had quality all over the pitch,” reflected Penzance manager Ashley Waters. “I have to take responsibility - I tried something and it simply didn’t work .We couldn’t match their quality, but the effort shown by the boys was outstanding and we must go into Boxing Day’s game taking positives from recent performances, and get back on track with three points.”

Penzance: Will Trenoweth, Archie Reynolds (Lewis Hitchens 89), Alfie Turner (Ryan Andrew 71), Ollie Butler, Liam Andrew (Freddie Neaum 60), Silas Sullivan, Jacob Trudgeon, Kam Collins, Tyler Tonkin (captain), Darryl Richards (Dylan Walter 79), James Butler (Michael Fitchett 46)

St Austell: Harry Ashton, Kieron Bishop, Jake Shaw, Tom Whipp, Ollie Brokenshire, George Marris, Neil Slateford (captain), Matt Searle (Martin Watts 75), Liam Eddy (Connor Wharton 62), Adam Carter, Jake Miller (Noah Teagle 46). Unused subs: Martyn Duff, Cody Hill

Referee: Josh Eyre

Assistants: Max Davies, Guy Pallett

Attendance: 120

Harrison and I watched a decent game at Broadclose this afternoon.
Bodmin started on the front foot and were passing the ball about with ease, however an unfortunate clearance allowed Billy Hopkins in, who curled a delicate chip over the keeper from an angle to put Bude 1 up.
The game switched between some very impressive football and some poor passages of play. Bude, for me were deserving of their single goal lead as we approached the half time whistle. Billy Hopcroft thought different however as he snatched his and Budes second on the stroke of halftime.
Bodmin started the second half strongly and got a deserved goal early in the half. The game then went end to end and was a bit scrappy to be honest. However as the half went on, I felt Bude were the most likely to score again, which they duly did after some great footwork from Alper Eroglu in the box caused panic in the Bodmin defence and a parry from the goal keeper was deflected back past him by a defender.
All in all a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

PRESS RELEASE from Graham Hambly

Ivybridge Town 0, Axminster Town 1

A THIRD successive defeat saw Ivybridge Town knocked out of the Walter C Parson League Cup when they lost 1-0 at home to Axminster Town in their third-round tie on Saturday (Dec 16). Ivybridge dominated long periods of the game but were unable to find the necessary finishing touch in front of goal.

The nearest they came was a shot from Fletcher Williams, which rebounded off the upright. That effort was shortly after Axminster grabbed the only goal of the game when Jake Quick broke clear to score with a well-placed shot in the 18th minute. Then came a couple of important saves by Axminster goalkeeper Chris Wearing, who did well to prevent Lewis Dickson from equalising for Ivybridge.

Ivybridge continued to have most of the possession during the remainder of the game but were unable to break down a determined Axminster defence as the visitors held out to book their place in the quarter finals of the competition.

It has proved a frustrating period for Ivybridge since their last win, a 2-0 home victory over Bridport on November 11.

During that period they have lost 3-0 at home to Plymouth Parkway in the Devon County Cup and 3-2 away to Sidmouth in the South West Peninsula League along with having three league matches postponed because of the weather.

They will be looking to bounce back from this latest disappointment when they resume their challenge at the top of the East Division table with a local derby visit to Elburton Villa on Boxing Day morning (11 am).

Ivybridge remain top of the table with 40 points from 15 games and are seven points clear of nearest rivals Crediton, who won 4-0 at Dartmouth on Saturday. Meanwhile, third placed Bridport are eight points behind with a game in hand following their 6-4 win at Teignmouth on Saturday.

The next home fixture for Ivybridge will be a league clash against Torridgeside at Erme Valley on Saturday December 30.
