Too far to travel? 🤔

More to it than that Dave. Not easy keeping a side going these days. Last season won 6 of 18, 2nd worst GD in the league, but had to take promotion to senior football for the 1st time ever. Hell of a lot of work going on at the moment just to keep the club going.

Popped in to watch Culdrose V praze which turned out to be one hell of a cup tie. Praze took the lead in just the 4th minute when a cross from the left was met by the Praze forward in the six yard box just ahead of a hesitant Culdrose keeper. Praze remained on top and scored again after 20 minutes when a goal bound shot deflected off a defender and looped over the stranded keeper. A scramble in the box led to a third after half an hour and the tie looked dead and buried, with Culdrose lacking effort and failing to create.

Second half, what a change, Culdrose came out playing with an intensity that threatened to overwhelm Praze, creating numerous chances. However, it wasn't till the 72nd minute they finally pulled one back. With their tails firmly up the game heated up, a bit of handbags following a foul by Praze led to a mass confrontation involving 15 players. When it all calmed down, after 3 yellows (2 for Culdrose) it was business as usual and Culdrose scored again after 84 minutes. Numerous chances for Culdrose again with the Praze keeper making a couple of excellent diving saves. In the last minute they won a corner and in a mad scramble managed to poke the ball in from close range.

Extra time was where the experience of the older players told, especially Culdrose Jamie Thirkle, who started to really control the game. In the 96th minute a tussle in the box led to some tired tackling and a soft penalty for Culdrose which they duly scored. Seven minutes later Thirkle headed past the stranded Praze keeper to put the Navy boys well I control. Thirkle then really took charge, retaining possession in the corners on numerous occasions, chipping the keeper but hitting the bar, and running the tired Praze midfield ragged as he kept Praze on the back foot for the rest of the match.

A fantastic match, a credit to both teams. Good luck to Culdrose in the next round.

Illogan 1 - 1 Torpoint Res (Torpoint won 4 - 3 on pens)

0 - 0 at half-time with Illogan to play down the slope 2nd half. Torpoint physically bigger and generally faster, so a handful for Illogan, still smarting after their 7 - 2 defeat to St Day last week. Torpoint went ahead on 74, a long cross-field ball to the RW resulting in a fine save by Wyatt who could only parry the ball to a Torpoint forward who could hardly miss. Rear-guard action thereafter  by Torpoint who defended efficiently until the 7th minute of added-on time when a now 10-man Illogan equalised from a LW corner, headed home at the far post. Extra time brought no further goals so it was down to pens.

Now my philosophy was to use my chosen five penalty takers in reverse order of likelihood to score, but Wyatt stepped up to take Illogan's first and instead of hitting full force down the middle as the 'keeper (usually) dives out of the way, he tamely put it wide. Torpoint scored their first three whilst Illogan did score their next two. Then Wyatt saved Torpoint's 4th, the next Illogan lad scored to make it 3 - 3. Now the pressure was on for Illogan's 5th penalty which the lad obviously had to score, (hence my tactic) but it was saved! Torpoint's fifth kicker scored and that was it.

Extra time and pens made it value for money: just a shame the tea-hut closed before 90 mins, otherwise I'd have had a 2nd hot choc!

70-odd spectators, and a happy journey east for the visiting team and supporters.

St Dominic 3 St Ives 2

First Team Match Report #15

St Ives made the long trip to Lovells with a bit of a free hit in the cup. Little to choose between the sides until around the half hour mark, Kieran Ryall was pulled down for a penalty but the resulting spot kick was excellently saved as was the follow up by the visitors keeper. It took a superb save by Jamie Blatchford to tip a St Ives long range effort round the post to keep the scores level at the break.

10 minutes in to the second half and we looked to have settled the nerves with Taylor Gerry playing in Ryall who shot back across goal to give us the lead. Within 5 minutes the visitors were level, loosing the ball high up the pitch a long ball dropped between our defenders followed by an unfortunate slip resulting in the number 9 being through one on one and he composed himself to finish. A set piece saw us regain the lead, with Harvey Barrett heading in a Kane Thomas corner at the far post. Again, back came the visitors, a cross from the right flicked home from 12 yards out. With the game looking set for extra time, we produced a nice move around the edge of the box with Gerry slipping Kieran Prescott in to side foot home the winner with less than a minute left on the clock.

Although we struggled to find much fluency in the game, full credit to the visitors, who are on a good run in the league below, they looked an accomplished side and played more than their part in a proper cup tie. Hope you enjoyed the beers on the way back St Ives Town Football Club.

Illogan RBL 1 - 1 Torpoint Athletic 1 (Torpoint win 4-3 on pens AET)

Torpoint goal scorer: Tom Rothwell

A game of few chances with both side's defences coming out on top and having solid games, all 4 centre halves robust throughout. The first half was Torpoint shooting down the slope and only three chances created for us. A great cross from the right wing from Bark found the free head of Taylor who tamely headed the ball down and wide of the target. Easterbrook found himself in on goal down to an unfortunate slip from the right back, with Easterbrook being closed down by the nearest covering defender his strong side footed effort was parried away by the goalkeeper to safety. The third opportunity came from a driving run infield from Small who skipped a tackle 20yds out and had time to get a driven effort on goal but the shot was too central and easily parried over the bar by Wyatt. We had a number of set pieces in the first half, and the game as a whole, and we didn't get a sniff at all, mainly thanks to the superb handling of the home custodian Wyatt. We limited Illogan's own chances on our goal with Sidey having little to do from memory. Both sides tried to play but final balls didn't have enough quality or the positioning and decision making from the back fours were to a high level. 0-0 at the break.

A positive break for us though as we praised the work ethic to limit Illogan's time on the ball and we closed down all over. Just needed to move the ball a little better into forward areas. I think we created less in the 2nd half to be honest, but we did manage to do enough to create the breakthrough. A ball out wide found Bark in time and space 16yards out to drive at goal, with Wyatt's save only parried 12 yards out to give Rothwell the opportunity to guide the loose ball home around 75mins to take the lead. With lots of changes made and a little time wasted on our part, the game began to peter out. But Illogan hadn't given up the ghost yet as the game still hung in the balance. A corner in the 93rd put every Illogan man in the box, including goalkeeper Wyatt, whose strong header at the front post was guided to the back post for the giant skipper Abbott-Smith to head home in front of the home support.

A quick turnaround to begin extra-time and a 30mins of little drama to be honest and towards the end you just felt no one would do something special to end the game in any manner other than the lottery of penalties. Thankfully we had plenty of belief and 8 volunteers stuck their hands up so we came up with the order and away we went, with Illogan going first and to my surprise the keeper stepping up first, only to drive his effort wide of the post. We scored our first 3 to lead 3-2 after 6 pens, only for our 4th taker to have his kick saved to the keeper's right and it was level 3-3 after 8. But to our delight the next Illogan pen was well saved and held by Sidey to give our final taker a different pressure, and he slotted with ease wrong footing the keeper for a 4-3 lottery win.

As underdogs against last season's finalists and lots of players missing we were delighted to go through and hopefully a good draw in the next round. At the least save me some fuel after having Polperro, Illogan and St Just away in our 3 cup games so far! Onto next Sat with players returning (I've said that for weeks but too many setbacks) where we head to Pennygillam.
