JJ JONES DUCHY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

New County Junior Cup holders Veryan are in a very strong position after a 6-0 win in the home leg of their Bodmin Sports Trophies League Cup semi-final with higher division Stoke Climsland. Veryan aiming for a fourth trophy won with an Ollie Young hat trick and goals for Craig Phillips, Martin O’Callaghan and Dan Vincent.

St.Stephen now look the only realistic challengers to Padstow for the Premier Division championship after beating second placed Looe Town 4-3. This was an extraordinary game with a flurry of early goals and two dismissals for Looe. The visitors caught the visitor’s cold in the first minute to go ahead. St.Stephen responded with a Kyle Willmott goal in the 6th minute and shortly after went ahead with a shot from the edge of the area from Johnny Orchard. Looe fought back to equalise the ball deceiving the home keeper and bouncing over his head into the goal. Craig Coad struck from 25 yards in the 16th minute to restore the home lead and ten minutes before half time Andrew Sincock headed them further ahead following a corner. Looe were reduced to ten men after a two-footed challenge in the 58th minute but showed their resolve by pulling back a third goal after a long ball again deceived the home keeper. Looe’s chance of pinching a point disappeared in the 71st minute with a second player dismissed, this time for a second caution, but the home team couldn’t take advantage to add to their score.

There are doubts whether St.Columb Major will run next season, but a 4-2 defeat at Lamerton will ensure it will be in first division football if they do. Dan Healy, Richard Searle, Paul Breyley and James Steer scored for Lamerton with Scott Wheadon and Oakley Rogers replying.

St.Newlyn East won a second successive game beating St.Dominick 5-0, and still retain outside hopes of avoiding relegation. Matt Toms and Jack Thompson scored a brace apiece with Scott Taylor completing the scoring.

Saltash United lost 3-2 at Lostwithiel so they still need a couple of points to ensure safety. James Hutchings, Graham Rule and Martyn Jones scored for Lostwithiel with Lee Jacketts and Garion Field replying.

Torpoint Athletic beat North Petherwin 1-0. The only goal came through a Matt Westall header from just inside the box.

Premier Sixes has salvaged a nigh on impossible position to secure their Division One future and pushed St.Cleer closer to the drop after a 7-2 win. Bartosz Stoppel scored his first goal for the club to put them ahead. Karl Olander scored the second from the penalty spot with Tony **** beating the offside trap for the third. Pete Ling and Olander scored to take the half time score to 5-0. Dan Sharp pulled a goal back after the break but St.Cleer were then down to ten men when a defender was sent off for tipping a shot over the bar with his hands. Olander stepped up for his second penalty and third goal of the game. James Colwill scored the goal of the game for St.Cleer, a vicious shot from thirty yards that left the home keeper standing. Ben Verrinder completed the home scoring.

St.Minver are close to securing promotion after Andy Seymour scored both their goals in a 2-0 win at LC Phoenix.

Grampound and Altarnun ended goalless. This was a game of few chances with Altarnun just shading possession. There was a good chance for either side in the second half but both were missed.

St.Mawgan had a good 3-0 away win at Edgcumbe. Stuart Harris scored a brace with James Olsen adding their other goal.

Callington Town kept up their relentless chase of the top two in Division Two winning 7-2 at Gunnislake. The home side had a bare eleven and were down to bare bones for various reasons for a second successive week. Ben Farrar and Ryan James scored the home goals. Callington won comfortably with Kevin Pethick scoring a brace and Ollie Turner, Liam Bryant, Kieran Prescott, Josh Searle and Wayne Stephens adding a goal apiece.

Sticker beat Holywell/Cubert Athletic 3-0 to set the highest point’s target they could in their last league game. The home side dominated the first half but with a combination of near misses and a resolute defence there was no scoring. With the second half breeze Sticker continued to press forward without success until a stunning shot from Connor Paine opened the scoring. A second followed after a cross was headed down by Bradley Ralph for Gus Angilley running on to shoot home. The third goal from Matt Searle was an accurate long range effort which sailed over the stranded keeper.

St.Dennis are second a point behind but with three games still to play. They beat Gerrans & St.Mawes United 1-0 with Dave Cloke scoring the only goal of the game.

Shane Kibell could be an inspired late transfer signing for Gorran as a hat trick at promoted Boscastle took him to seven goals from two games. Gorran won 4-3 to vastly improve their chances of avoiding the drop from Division Three jumping up three places and off the bottom. Jack Bray-Smith scored their other goal. Boscastle replied with goals from Jake Dickinson, Dan Piper and Sam Haddy.

St.Breward edged Grampound reserves nearer to the drop after winning by the only goal of a game of few chances. Mike Hoskin was the scorer in his first appearance of the season with Josh Galvin unlucky not to score a second near the end when an outrageous effort hit the bar.

St.Merryn earned a crucial 2-0 win against Division Four leaders Godolphin Atlantic reserves to ensure the title and promotion race will go right to the wire. A cracking game of football became overheated at times but the referee showed great common sense to calm the teams down. St.Merryn took the lead midway through the second half when good work by Josh Dark set up Mike Shearer to score a superb opener. The second was very much a team goal well finished by Robert Centini.

Mevagissey are within two points of Godolphin with three games in hand after defeating St.Minver reserves 5-1. Matt Chesterfield gave the hosts an 18th minute lead. Ben Bould scored twice in the 35th and 40th minutes to stretch their lead. This was a competitive game although St.Minver didn’t threaten too often but did pull a goal back on the hour through Joe Robinson. Bould put the game out of reach with his hat trick goal five minutes later with Cezary Kiraga getting the fifth in the 70th minute.

Southgate Seniors took a giant stride towards avoiding relegation by beating their main rival Lanreath. Adam Porter scored the only goal of the game to open up a three point gap over Lanreath with Wadebridge already relegated.

Tregrehan Mills moved up to fourth after a 3-0 win at Pelynt reserves.

Luke Robinson scored the home consolation as Rame Peninsula suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Delabole United.

Kilkhampton are champions of Division Five. They defeated Roche 5-0, one of the only two teams with any chance of stopping them prior to the game. Lee Gardiner scored a hat trick with Joel Davey a penalty and a Tom Shadrick goal completing their tally. League Chairman Colin Burrell presented the trophy to the worthy champions after the game.

Real Saltash put themselves in prime position for runners up after beating fellow challengers Padstow United reserves 5-1. A game of high passion saw Mike Morrish and Wayne Skeldon score a brace apiece. Kyle Butters completed the home tally with Kyle Tippett getting the Padstow consolation.

St.Dennis reserves thrashed Saltash United reserves 6-1. Brandon Wilson scored a brace, his first goals of the season. Saul Niles, Luke Damerell, Nathan Hugh and James Carne scored the other home goals with Ashley Hooper getting the visitors consolation.

St.Teath fell behind to Pensilva in a scrappy first half after a poor back pass was picked up by the visitor’s centre forward. The hosts were much improved after the restart and equalised from the penalty spot after a Pensilva player handled on the line and was dismissed. Ben Jarram scored that spot kick and not long after a second penalty was awarded for a foul tackle and Craig Thompson put St.Teath 2-1 ahead. They were unable to increase the score and plucky Pensilva fought back strongly near the end and were unlucky not to take a point after two good breakaways and a fine save by the home keeper.

Sometimes football can be a strange old game and none more than today in the lc phoenix vs st minver game. Around 5 minutes before Ko the ref enter the dressing room to express his concerns regarding the pitch quality as there were a couple of divots from previous games around the 6 yard line he then declared it somehow unfit 5 minutes before ko bearing in mind he was stood by the changing rooms for 20 minutes he then took me down to view the other pitch (which I had decided when I arrived to put nets up was in a worse condition). along with the ref I showed him the reason why we set up on the other pitch there was more than a few more dangerous footholes from previous games covered by long grass which hadn't been cut by college caretakers on two areas of the pitch after putting his boots in said footholes he somehow decided this was acceptable talk about double standards, so reluctantly I said we would delay kick off and shift the nets so we could have a game. Ironically on a warm up run after setting up I turned my ankle in a foothole. finally after this farce the teams lined up but before ko the ref booked our striker not 100% sure why, 15 seconds later he was dismissed after a meaty challenge. phoenix then had the uphill task of playing 11 v 10 for 89 more minutes and in fairness made life difficult for minver who broke the deadlock through a deflected shot from andy Seymour both teams exchanged possession and shots for the rest of the with nothing notable to add. the second was like the first both teams having chances with the minver keeper making 2 very good stops but both teams had trouble making the ball stick to feet on a awful surface. Phoenix kept minver honest till andy Seymour secured all three points with a scuffed shot that somehow beat the keeper. The result puts minver in the driving seat for second spot.

Also if any lanreth players who played southgate after on the same pitch read this what are your thoughts on the playing surface?

Thanks

Wasn't there so cannot comment on the state of the pitch but if two referees thought it was ok, one of them after your match, then perhaps it may have been playable after all. Not many teams complain about their own pitch on this forum.

have you asked your player why the ref cautioned him before the match? Have you asked the player why he made a foul only 15 seconds into the match when he had already upset the referee prior to kick off and was carrying a yellow card ?

You  may need to look a little closer to home to find a resolve to your two burning questions ....... I only have the statements that you have made on this forum to go by but your player made this match very difficult for the rest of the team and will now miss what could be a very crucial match at the end of the season. Perhaps you should speak to him ...........

Some players are more aggressive than others.  Occasionally you see silly behaviour before the whistle has even been blown.

i cautioned one young man a few seasons back for not properly observing the minute's silence. We hadn't kicked off yet.

I've seen one get cautioned this season, straight after kick off, for sliding in and taking the player out. It happens sometimes, that is why you get very early cautions sometimes. It's not all that rare really, but sometimes the onlookers are unaware that a caution has been awarded so it is rarely reported.

Why should that be if the card has to be "waved in the air"?

I wasn't going to comment on this but just for the record the first caution was issued for threatening an opponent as the teams were about to kick off and the second for a very high late challenge.

Is this the quickest yellow you've ever shown Karaoke?

In response I haven't complained about the cards the referee was spot on with both counts I didn't have a problem with that I was just a little annoyed he decided to change the pitch 5 minutes before ko. I chose the original pitch after arriving at the ground because its actually the better surface and the grass wasn't over ankle high in the corners. the ref and minver players were concerned about a couple of foot holes around the goal but the pitch we ended up playing on worse it not only had more holes but were deeper and bobbly this was evident when the ball was in play on the deck being passed about then ending up hitting the player on the chin or on one occasion hitting a hole from a over the top ball and bouncing back the other way it was like having an invisible defender at times haha, and to be perfectly honest if we had played on the original choice we would probably been pumped by more than 2 . I'm only commenting on the pitch we play on because we aren't impressed ourselves and we have had a handful of teams in the past comment on the poor quality but We don't own the pitch so we can't maintain it although I have offered if a roller and mower were supplied but insurance gets in the way of that option, we just have to turn up and play and trust me we want to play on the pitch we played on and when its been rolled and cut its a great pitch but even our players don't want to use it in its current state and moan when its waterlogged and have to play on the other choice.
