  • Dave Deacon changed the title to RESULTS - SATURDAY 30 September 2023

Yate Town             1 - 2       Mousehole
19’ William Sage                  58’ HaydenTurner, 61’ Jack Bray-Evans

Another game of two halves with Mousehole outplayed in the first half then unstoppable in the second.

Yate made it clear how the game was going to be played within the 1st minute when the first time Hayden Turner was on the ball the right back went through him with a tackle that would have been a clear yellow in any other period of the game but in that ‘unwritten rule’ way in the first 10 minutes just results in a long lecture from the ref. For the rest of the half Yate focused on denying us space in their half and forcing us back into ours. It wasn’t pretty but it was effective and in a half where both teams were restricted to half chances rather than real chances Yate deserved their 1-0 lead at the interval.

Jake Ash made two changes at half-time. The first was to bring Jack Bray-Evans on for Josh Bissett and Jack’s extra physicality made an immediate difference. The second was to play longer balls out of midfield into the channels for Hayden Turner and Jack Bray-Evans to run on to. Hayden and Jack were both quicker than their full backs and the impact was to repeatedly turn Yate’s defence and as a result they looked vulnerable for the first time in the game.

The game was won in a three minute spell. On 58 minutes Hayden beat his defender to a long ball into the inside left channel and beat the keeper one-on-one. Then on 61 minutes Morgan Lewis breaking from defence outpaced the right back and passed into the box. Although the ball was behind Jack Bray-Evans he turned and collected, span past his defender then hit a beautiful low shot to the keeper’s right.

In the last half hour Hayden could have had a hat-trick but it just wasn’t his day. The only moment of danger came 2 minutes into added time when Yate were awarded a free kick dead centre on the edge of the box but Ollie Chenoweth saved.

The result leaves Mousehole as the only unbeaten team in the Division, and 3rd in the table with games in hand over the two teams above.

Another step in the right direction for us at Tavistock. First league clean sheet of the season and we’ve come away slightly disappointed not to have taken 3 points.

First half we were the dominant side but without too many clear cut chances. Plenty of half chances and final ball lacking meant we went in 0-0. Think Stu said in his interview we had 9 shots in the first half but only 3 on target.

Second half was a bit more even with neither side creating too many chances. Think Westbury time wasting to kill the game (and rightly so away from home) probably tells you who was happy with a point.

After a difficult start to the season it’s nice to have got 4 points this week. Hopefully we can kick on now with a trip to Exmouth next week where we always find it tough!

Things starting to turn around at Tavi. A trip to Exmouth is always a hard game, but they're second bottom and look like they have a few problems themselves. A lot of similarities to Stuart Henderson's side in that it has been a few seasons of continuous upward progress under a long term manager, also a group of players that have been together for a long time with a few of them possibly reaching the end of the road.

Is Mattie Buchan still based in Cornwall, in the Helston area?

I would really like to see him (back) in a Falmouth shirt week in week out.  I know its a "step down" but he is exactly what they need at the moment to kick them on in my opinion.

See he grabbed a second half hat trick for Bideford last Saturday, good to see he's back and firing again after a couple of injury blighted seasons.

May be an option for Falmouth next season if they manage to get promoted, but would think he'll catch the eye of step 3 clubs if he keeps scoring. Not many goal scorers around at that level, and everybody wants them.

I know my previous comment about him potentially staying local contradicts my personal stance that players should play at the highest level they can, and if that means travel nothing should old them back.

As a Cornish player, I think he has slightly gone under the radar the last 12/18 months, I just think Falmouth with how they play and what they "need" would be a great fit.

Couldn't agree more that maybe a promotion would make that more of a possibility.

Good luck to Mattie for the rest of his season
