Braintree 3 Truro 2

The old cliche about the "game of two halves" applies to this match.

City went in 2 down at half time, and it probably should have been more, it looked like it would be a harsh re-introduction to NLS away days. Rocky Neal was contained pretty well, and there was little from Adam Porter and Dan Rooney in the midfield. Second half, a different story, don't know what Paul Wotton said or what he put in the half time cuppa, but City yet again showed the resilient streak (and no little quality) that carried them through last season.  Suddenly Rooney and Porter controlled the game and Neal was an elusive threat. Loanee signing Harvey Greenslade got them back into the game with reward for their attacking play, before Neal equalised in the 6th minute of stoppage time. Unfortunately, one final dramatic twist as Braintree scored the winner in the 7th minute of stoppage time. Heartbreak, but Truro can take a lot from this and showed that they aren't pushovers at this level, especially against a side that was so strong at home last season and many fancy to be in and around the play offs.

One final thought, it was effectively a 100 minute game today (when you counted in all the stoppage time from both halves), is that now to be the norm? Will certainly cause managers to think differently about tactics and how they use their substitutions.

Yes,WOTP unfortunately it is the new normal.

It stems from the Qatar WC and is a FIFA directive that is supposedly meant to filter down to all levels (incl Amateur).

The clock is stopped for the obvious reasons like injuries and subs but now also for goal celebrations and for the time the ball is spent out of play.

The aim is to try to get as close to 90 mins of actual play as possible, where some games previously have been worked out at as little as 70 mins of actual playing time !

Agree with your take on managers and substitutions, will they now (providing no injuries) keep one of the three back for added on time, however not a good idea as this time will be added on as well ! Not to mention the additional sub you get for extra-time.

Who'd be a boss eh ?

I heard a stat somewhere not long ago that in League 1 or 2 last season the average 'ball in play' time was 48 minutes of the 90!

Hence the big clampdown on timewasting and a stricter calculation of time added being introduced!

It’s not happening at the lower steps levels as they don’t all have floodlights so the referee wouldn’t be able to add enough time to beat the daylight.

Agree that it's not practical in the lower reaches of grassroots to be adding 15 mins on in January.

However, we are in the NLS section of the forum and I'd hope all clubs have managed to get lights up at this stage 🤣
