Liskeard Athletic on the failed SW Peninsula / Western League merger

If you finish 4th (where they currently sit) in a 16 team league and get promoted would you really be deserving or rather the fortunate beneficiaries of a restructure?

deserving or not , the clubs were told at the beginning of the season that the top 4 will be promoted, so clubs planned for that in advance, only to have it taken  away from them, so totally understand how frustrated they feel!

The worry at Liskeard (as with the other leading Peninsula League clubs who spent big with an eye on joining the new merged league) must now be that the step 4 and 5 outfits will come calling for their leading players. Would think that the likes of Harvey Mullis, Harry Jeffrey and Dan Jennings will be on various wishlists.

Of course they would be deserving if that was the rules at the start of season.....it wasn't as if teams pull out later and they were gonna chuck extra up...silly comment

Just look back at our senior leagues over the last 4/5 seasons & you will find an awful lot of teams are where they are, certainly not on merit, but because of the restructure of the leagues. Look at Mousehole & Helston for example , how many leagues have they won to get to where they are now.

Not their fault of course, if it’s on offer, they are not going to refuse it.

I didn't say it was anyone's fault & of course no club with any ambition would turn it down but I don't think you can be sitting 4th in a 16 team league and say you deserve promotion. They would have beneficiaries of a restructuring just like Helston and Mousehole were although that was of course in very unique circumstances with 2 successive seasons being stopped.

It was never set in stone but I can of course understand they feel frustrated however I'm not sure how you can sit 4th in a 16 team league and say you deserve to play at a higher level.

The SWPL(W) started the season with 18 teams, not that that dilutes your argument. Putting the geography aside, the stupidity of having a pyramid with 17 leagues at Step 6 and same, now postponed/cancelled?, at Step 5 is obvious. IF the league winners had taken the promotions, the Western League may now have looked a lot different. So the clubs caused the FA action and now it has bitten them on the bum.
