Jeff Chambers
Its been 9 years since Falmouth Town chairman Graham Medlin decided to give young local boy Andrew Westgarth the managers job at struggling Cornish football club giant Falmouth Town. The good times had long gone and it was a case of survival and saving Bickland Park from the housing developers, this was done successfully thankfully. Thanks to Meds and Westy the club on and off the field over the last 9 years has risen once again. The iconic Bickland Park is looking awesome and is about to undergo many more improvements this summer and on the field of play Westys team has gone from strength to strength. What a manager !! in his 9 year reign which includes 2 seasons wiped out with Covid Westy has won: 1 x Western League play off winners (Promotion to the Southern league for the first time in the clubs history) 1 x SWPL WEST league title winners. 3 x Cornwall Senior Cups. 1 x SWPL League Cup. 1 x Charity Bowl. 1 x Champions Bowl ( Winners of SWPL West v East). Bickland Park is leading all the attendance tables in the Western League, the crowds are flocking back and the matchday atmosphere at Bickland is unique for a non league ground in Cornwall & Devon. The Packet End full of a noisy F-Troop is as good as it gets at non league level. Yesterday at Wendron in the Cornwall Senior Cup final, 2-1 down in the 119th minute we all stood behind the goal resigning ourselves to defeat with 1 minute of extra time to play. And then......................................................... WHOOOOOOSH. Swanny gives us a lifeline with a goal we never thought would come, especially after our midfield warrior Andreas had just hit the post and then a minute later the MOM, the irrepressible Luke Barner stabbed home the winner. The F-Troop went wild and the Cornwall Senior Cup was won. Amazing and sums up Westys never say die attitude which he has installed in his young local team. What a manager !! What a Football Club !! mattelot
Totally Agree with all the above jeff.Westy and the boys have done us proud once again. Credit must go to you as well for re- inventing our 12th man ,the F troop.your dedication to the cause both home and away is excellent especially the amount of work you put in to organise the charter flight to Jersey. Looking forward to next season and new challenges. What are the odds on being drawn away to Guernsey in the FA trophy and another charter flight. Mitchy
Penwerris Inn (Falmouth Tavern) or the Fourwinds, were great drinking establishments plus The Marina Bar under Tolly when the Tavern no longer existed. Great times, greater people and I'm afraid we will never see the like again !! Jeff Chambers, mattelot and Town Fan
