Div 3 West: Holman SC 6-1 Lanner

The parched landscape which shrouded blaythorne in thick dust before the match nearly meant the game at Blaythorne didn’t go ahead however luckily the strong April sun burnt off any lingering doubts and ref Tom Milburn warning the players to apply factor 50 and restrain themselves from any 10 yd sliding tackles due to the danger of skin grafts deemed the pitch playable.

Both teams started brightly on the incredibly bouncy surface with the ball whipping about and the two keepers were called on early to deny decent chances. Holmans made the breakthrough about 20 min in to take the lead and two quick goals followed thereafter to take a 3-0 lead in front of a strong turnout of around 60 spectators all enjoying ice creams and wearing shorts and flip flops. Lanner pulled one back before half time as Holmans keeper Scott Atrill decided the recent bbc and itv coverage of the 6 nations was sorely missed and required re-enactment of clearing out a maul in the penalty area resulting in a cast iron penalty so cast iron it came from the ironmongers, was clad in iron and with a label on it saying ‘iron be here’. The penalty was nicely dispatched into the roof of the net for a 3-1 HT score.

with the clocks ‘springing’ forward on the weekend and sun high in the sky the decision was taken to reduce the half’s to 40min due to possible lingering brightness and also reduce any words of wisdom boring the players from the managers at halftime and mainly to get a decent chance of catching the start of the Arsenal match. The visitors probably had their best spell for the first 10 min but with the sun continuing to beat down and the pitch getting even harder their was some doubts the concrete like surface would remain playable, luckily Holmans managed to add another 3 in the final 15 to take the full time score to a rather flattering 6-1

The Div 3 West title battle is really hotting up now and still very much a 3 horse race with only 2 promotion places available. Holmans remain top with a decent goal difference however dropship can lead by 1 point if they win their games in hand and Probus are still capable of hammering someone to close the goal difference gap. It could all go down to the last game of the season. Holmans with 5 games to go have decided to throw in a weekend trip to Portugal on a ‘not the end of the season yet’ tour………I have reminded them as treasurer the clubs coffers are not enough for Portuguese bail money 😆 if it all goes pear shaped I might have to dust off the shin pads 😉
