Ref question

One for Bighairydave and co … when a ref card gets rescinded - is there any comeback for the refs involved?

Not unless they're wrong in law.

If a misjudgement of a tackle then a bit of education might be applicable and an explanation of the reasoning but no discipline etc.

However, if a referee gets something wrong in law then it may well be a different story.

There are rarely any direct consequences, or I think what you mean is punishment.

Its possible that, where appropriate the referee would receive development and coaching feedback from the refereeing department, especially where there have been multiple instances of incorrect sanctions.

It is possible, in more severe circumstances, where the referee is wrong in law that the referee could be charged, receive a suspension and/or a fine AND potentially a match replayed.

It's important to note that the laws of the game say this:

"Decisions will be made to the best of the referee’s ability according to the Laws of the Game and the ‘spirit of the game’ and will be based on the opinion of the referee, who has the discretion to take appropriate action within the framework of the Laws of the Game.

The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final. The decisions of the referee, and all other match officials, must always be respected"

As I understand it Appeals don't rescind the red card (that physically can't happen as the player has already served punishment by taking no further part in the game concerned), but to appeal the subsequent suspension that usually follows.

Often the appeals are not heard by referees and therefore do sometimes throw up the odd decision that doesn't necessarily align with the laws of the game.

I think at professional level the appeals are 1 former ref, 1 former player and 1 former manager and are won on a majority vote. Not sure that is the same at the levels we are, presumably, talking about here.
