Porthleven 0 v Newquay 1

Deserved win by a spirited Newquay side against a very lacklustre Porthleven who despite having a very impressive line-up of four coaches, assistants, managers or whatever else they were meant to be standing next to each other in the tech area, couldn’t manage to make a single difference and waited until 10 minutes before time to make any substitutions. (too many cooks and all that springs to mind)

So, Penzance retain the lead of the division, which they will probably go on to win now. And Newquay, back on track after their boxing day blip perhaps.

Fair assessment Arlen - some of us were also wondering about the number of coaches etc in the technical area!!!!!

Danny Burrows in the home goal made some great saves and Matt Armstrong - Ford in the Newquay goal made one brilliant save to deny Richard Young in the first half.

Falmouth unlucky to lose to Tavvy today in a game in which they should have scored after about 30 secs and gone in at least 2 up. After having a header from a free kick cleared off the line, Town seemed to run out of steam and visibly dropped afetr Tavvy scored against the run of play. Not a bad game though in the freezing cold!!

Admittedly Town hustled well in the first half and really should have scored at least two, in addition they had Paul Wolstencroft's free-kick which hit the bar with Andy Meeds in goal for once beaten. But that's the way it seems to go when you're struggling.

They longer the game went on, it was always going to be Tavy that scored. When they upped the tempo, something manager Ian Southcott was asking them to do on a regular basis, they held the upper hand, especially when they brought on Glyn Hobbs, Will Stringer and Andy Bowker. How many sides in the league could boast a better sub trio than that this afternoon?

Goals from Ryan Honey (soon after replaced by Hobbs) and a tap-in from Hobbs clinched it for the visitors.

For me Adam Trudgian stood out in Town's side, but I think we will all agree it's going to be interesting to see how things unfold under the new management of Alan Carey. It's not going to be easy turning around one of the county's biggest clubs.

A great win today for Newquay, they're certainly doing their own Championship hopes no harm with this sort of victory. And a shout must go out to Billy's Foxhole side too with only 3 defeats so far and another superb result today to follow their hard fought draw with St Austell.

But for me (and no doubt this may upset a few of the chasing pack although not my intention to) PZ and Port were the 2 favourites to win the SWPL Div 1 at the start of the season with St Austell being the biggest challengers to them and I still believe this now. Big shame the Cally v St Austell match didnt take place today as it may have proven critical to the hopes and ambitions of not only St Austell but Cally also.

If St Austell are to push the top 2 all the way to the finish line they surely have to become more ruthless in order to turn draws into wins and maybe not be so concerned with losing games in their approach to matches. Would be interesting to hear the opinions of any St Austell folk who have followed their story so far this season? Do you folk on the terraces believe silverware can return to 'Town' this season??

I certainly do. (IMO)
