The Governor Posted January 7 Report Share Posted January 7 I doubt if anyone will go down. I believe 20 teams were the original number but with several pulling out and teams getting promoted the league has been low on numbers hence no relegation. The easy solution would be to promote more than the alowed one team from each feeder league but then there is the issue of clubs meeting the ground grading requirements. No one from the East as majority don’t have the facilities or are reserve teams unable to meet the gap requirement between the WL and SWL. Dave Deacon Posted January 7 Author Report Share Posted January 7 PRESS RELEASE from Graham Hambly Newton Abbot Spurs 0, Ivybridge Town 4 IVYBRIDGE Town extended their lead at the top of the table when they began the New Year with a convincing 4-0 away victory over Newton Abbot Spurs in the South West Peninsula League on Saturday (Jan 6). The match was one of only three to beat the weather in the East Division with nearest rivals Crediton and Bridport both having a blank afternoon. Ivybridge have now won 16 of their 18 league matches with only one defeat and lead the table by 15 points over second placed Crediton, who have two games in hand, while they are 16 points clear of Bridport, who have three games in hand. The breakthrough for Ivybridge came in the 28th minute at Newton Abbot when Spurs had Finn Pearce sent off for handling the ball on the goal line to keep out a shot from Chris Wright. Jake Lane saw the resultant penalty kick saved but followed up to score from the rebound for his ninth goal of the season. The lively Jack Alexander brought his season’s tally to ten goals with a double strike in the second half, scoring in the 53rd and 72nd minutes. Ivybridge wrapped up their third successive victory when substitute Bailey Mabin made it 4-0 in the 81st minute. Joint manager Wayne Gamble was delighted with the Ivybridge performance commenting: “This was a fantastic win with a great squad performance. We do not fear anyone and have created a massive points gap at the top of the table. It is now a mountain for the other teams to climb.” Although Alexander capped another impressive performance with his two goals, Gamble also praised Wright for his efforts in midfield and striker Connor Rush took the man of the match award with a great performance in leading the attack. While it proved another free-scoring afternoon for Ivybridge, credit was due to skipper Scott Pocock and Josh Zimmerman for a sound display at the heart of defence. Also taking the eye were a couple of recent signings, Billy Northcott and Owen Pritchard. Gamble said: “Billy did really well for us in midfield while Owen, who joined us from Tavistock, is a fine addition to our attack.” Ivybridge now have two successive home matches coming up with fourth-placed Cullompton due at Erme Valley on Saturday (Jan 13) while they host Axminster a week later. The Town Man Posted January 7 Report Share Posted January 7 Is the rule still in place that means Falmouth Town reserves can only be promoted if the firsts make it to the Southern League? Not sure if this rule makes sense as the practicalities are that jumping two levels is too big a step up for most players. This isolates the two teams and limits upward mobility in the club.
