Reserve game very competitive no quarter asked or given by either side. We should have had a pen inside 2 mins but hey thats life. After all said and done two teams enjoyed a laugh together in the bar afterwards and enjoyed the Pr**k of the week entertainment!

Well done all, the spirit of Junior football is alive and well in Mining 3!

Redruth Utd vs Gwinear called off.

No show from referee (due to family berievement apparently-so thoughts go out to that ref and family) and Gwinear not happy with the replacement referee. :angry2: Very annoying from a Reds point of view as we were all up for the game despite the miserable weather and were slightly disappointed with Gwinears attitude concerning the replacement ref (who has reffed us before at short notice and is more than competent). Having said that, it did start drizzleing slightly so maybe the Gwinear boyz didnt want to get mud under their fingernails. :P

In fairness Number 16, whilst our Reserve team manager was happy to referee the whole game, he couldn't really be classed as a replacement ref as such as he wasn't independent.

When this wasn't acceptable to Gwinear, we offered an alternative of someone from our camp refereeing one half, and one from Gwinear's team doing the other. However, neither of us had an officially registered referee (wish I kept my registration up now!!). But as we could not force the game to go ahead, Gwinear were within their rights not to play.

Having said that, with both teams having changed up, warmed up, cooled down etc etc, it basically meant an afternoon spoilt. As far as I can remember, that is the first time ever that this has happened to us when another team has refused to play Redruth Utd when a willing volunteer could be found to referee.

I think we need to remember that many games in Cornwall go ahead, without a registered referee, with the cooperation of both teams. If this didn't happen at the lower levels , we'd be playing right throughout the summer in many cases.

Just a shame that the game couldn't have gone ahead - we weren't playing a title decider after all!

I've yet to hear why either a replacement referee wasn't provided, or why we weren't notified at all, but won't jump to conclusions until I hear from the appropriate channels.

Decent game today over at Pool School, Gerrard8's men were up for it,as they always seem to be.

We got the break through 1/2 way the the 1st half,Beefy tried hithching a lift from Dwaine & bought him down for our 1st of 2 pens, strictly speaking he should have been sent off...but I'm not going to talk about the refs performance. Dwaine converts the pen. It continues to be a good battle, plenty of banter

from the sidelines & singing..that guy is so funny by the way. Last kick of the 1st half is a Trevenson pen,

A bucks go to ground to smoother the ball & Utd's player falls over him...pen given...Sara scores.

2nd half the battle continues,a lot of tit for tat with us having the slightly better opportunities in front of goal.

The game turns when the ex Blazey player goes off injured,Dwaine got fouled in the box for our 2nd pen,

not sure if the pen was awarded from the keeper or 2 attempted tackles during the scramble. Utd's

keeper is then sent off & there left winger goes in goal, after about 8/10 minutes Dwaine eventually

converts the penalty to give us a 1-2 lead. Against ten men we didnt really get tested & Reno scores our third after a bit of a mazy...

This game will be talked about because of the ref & not the good battle it actually was.

See you soon gerrard8 & good luck in the Dunn Cup.

as the general said a good game played in good spirit.have to agree was a definate pen in first couple of minutes.gulval wanted it more than us end of story.

still trying to work out who was more surprised when coopsies cross went in the goal.he had the biggest grin on his face.and it was against the wind.

watching mangle drink a pint turn 15 times around a stake then fall flat on his arse when trying to kick a ball was the funniest thing ever. and all because he was the pr**k of the day.though i think all of our team should of had that award.

fair play to all at gulval and good luck against tms in the semis :c:

thought the ref did a half descent job today as well.at least he was consistant to both teams and you knew were you stood

If you'd seen our cup final last season, and half a dozen of our games this season, you would know that I'm actually a master at scoring goals such as the one yesterday. They are a regular occurance but I guess I have to accept that people just consider them flukes.

It was a really enjoyable game yesterday and I truly believe that all at Titans FC are a credit to the league and a very welcome addition to what we had in the league last season. They are happy to socialise and enjoy banter in the bar whether they win, lose or draw.

Postman Pat, please say thankyou to the guy that got me a pint after the game. Which he incidentally got for me because he thought it was a good goal and can't believe I've had two like that against you this season. Though the first one was alot better than yesterdays.

Thanks again to all at Titans and I hope that you've enjoyed your first season in the league and I hope I get the chance to play against you and socialise with you again next season. :clapper: :c:

Hi Gerrard8 and baggie good assesment of the game Baggie, i thought the game came down to our experienced players and team effort, not to say that trevenson were not putting the effort in because they where, we where just more organised and ruthless in the tackles. Again the commitment from our boys was outstanding after a hard game on tuesday night and this one to follow well done lads.

Best of luck gerrard8 for the rest of the season and as baggie said go on and win that Dunn cup now....

Well Mr Gerrard 8 you know I am going to take issue with you over the comment that you know my players better than I do !!

You might think you know them better than I do and that might have been true from years gone by, but to my knowledge this is the first time that all 5 of the players that you have mentioned have played in the same team?

They have all had to adapt their game to play in this team and that alone would change the way they play, add to that the passion and commitment they also put in week in week out and I am afraid you don't know them at all anymore. <_<

If you want my opinion on the game we were better organised, better prepared and certainly better disciplined.

Having said all that - best of luck in the Dunn Cup and we look forward to meeting you in our next league encounter and possibly the next round of the Arthur Pearce Cup when hopefully we will be able to field our full squad. :D

I'm not sure where this is going Gerrard 8, I think you have missed the whole point of my posting.

I think you will find that I knew these players ( apart from Wardy he is a bit after my era :D ) a long long long time ago ( Yes I am even older than I look :( ).

I am not sure where you think I have come from, but I am embarrased to say, I played against Jason and Alan when they were mere chicks and I have played with and against Sammo over the years ( I still have the scars to prove it  ) the only player I have not played against is Darren ( but I have had the pleasure of watching him) and yes they are all class players and your right you can't teach what is a God given talent.

I have never said that I have improved these players, but I will stick by my earlier comment that every time you change club and you play in a different team yes you bring your talent to that team (thats why you are there) but you still have to adapt to a certain degree to the players around you and to the style of play that the manager wants and that in itself changes you own style of play and all these players have done just that superbly.

I do agree there are some fine first team managers out there, Phil from Threemilestone & Rhonnda from Gulval immediately spring to mind, who could of, and have, acheived much success over the years, but I would also like to think that what ever level of success Portreath has acheived over the last 4 years since I joined them, is not just down to the players alone.

As far as my comment on preparation .............................. it was team preparation I was referring to.

I am not sure why Portreath being thrown out of the Dunn Cup, as you put it, has been brought into this discussion, but that was not down to me or my players it was an administration error by our secretary and he has already posted an apology on this website.

ok sweeper some fair points put well.my only problem is thease boys have not changed they way they play to fit into portreaths gameplan, surely at our level and its good to remember how low that is,you just sign proven players who are good at what they do i.e if i signed nick mills i woudnt have to change him just let him do what he does.its not rocket science that alan in goal ,darren, brett, samo and wardy are going to be a good back four ,why change what is proven.as for manager skills i think you find out more about yourself next season when you compete against squads with the same and more ability than yours who may change formation a couple times a game .anyway you are right you have turned portreath around and i respect that. :clapper:

Cornish New Boys 1 - St Buryan 0

Well deserved 3 points for CNB in a great battle of a match. Could of gone either way but decided with a well taken penalty. (Had to be retaken for some reason with Dawson tapping in the rebound)

Thanks to St Buryan for a great match, and best of luck for the rest of the season.

On more lighter note than the other posting. Well done to St Ives Mariners on Saturday beating us 5-2. I would also like to thank my team for putting up with me playing up front. There a reason that i always played in goal because i am crap everywhere else and old. I now no that i am old because i wast't even fast enough to make a foul.

Storm 4 - 2 Troon

Both teams played some good football but this was more of a battle in fairness. When Storm got the ball down and played the football they are capable of this was the diference, along with 2 early goals in the second half, having gone in 1-1 at the break. There were a couple of free kicks scored although in wet conditions I don't think either keeper will thank me for this mention.

Finally Storm found some partnerships on the field and a work rate that has helped to win the game. Well done lads! Against a team that works as hard as Troon with Matty on the sideline I think this is a very good win.

Sounds like the Trevenson game was fun!

Hard luck Gerrard8 better luck next time. You have the quality without question, just some of your players are still new to each other in my opinion, and Portreath have had the majority of that side together for a while now (class act though!).

I don't celebrate scoring Mr Eddy. Infact I get nothing but grief from the managers of both teams at Gulval because I'm such a miserable looking sod on the pitch. I wasn't surprised that saturday's effort went in but I did think that perhaps the keeper could have done more with it because I'm sure that when I looked up, he was only a yard or so off his line?.

Mangle has never been able to walk straight, so you've no need to worry yourself about him mate. Not too sure whether he has managed to get the grass stains out of his jeans though. It was a really nice touch when your lads applauded him when he came back in from the wet and cold.

Thanks for your words of encouragement for our Semi final, it would be great to have you all down to watch (only if you don't give me too much grief). All the best for the rest of the season mate.

My guess (and it is only a guess) is that Mangle is one of the people that think that Portreath wouldn't be quite so successful if certain players weren't receiving a little "financial incentive" to represent the club each week??.

I would like to point out that Mangle is a thoroughly nice bloke though. However, he's a gooner, so feel free to get stuck into him and his opinions. :c:

Maybe Mangle is getting a little frustrated because the Arsenal have gone to pot lately...

Though Mangle can be a little gobby on the pitch he seems to be an OK guy but I wont get dragged into that same old discussion but he is entitled to his opinion.

Look, who can forget Mr. Sweepers post of 26th August 2007 (following a comment by Praze no8 who had somehow, for some inexplicable reason, suggested money was on offer at Portreath) when he said:

"Oh come on Praze no8 not that old chestnut again, this comes up every season and every season the answer is the same - NO PLAYER AT PORTREATH GETS PAID!!!!!

Due to generosity of our sponsors Portreath is a self financing club, this means that we do not ask for any money from our first team or reserve team players for signing on or subs every week.

This does save each player first team and reserves team a considerable amount money every season .

In closing, I will say one more thing, players play for Portreath because they want to, its as simple as that, but if people out there are not willing to believe this, unfortunately there is nothing we as a club can do?".

Surely this statement is enough to rid our local leagues of the perennial gossip that players are being paid at Portreath. And if not, SO WHAT. There are no rules to say local, small amateur football clubs, who play with mates and for the love of the game, are not allowed to fork out and pay potentially good players who are better than those of their opponents who have to make their players pay subs to survive.

If there were such rules, we would all obey, and I'm sure some of the teams would find it a little more difficult to field such good players. With some paying and some not (unable to) there will always be a bit of an imbalance. That is a shame. There is nothing wrong with ambition, and hats off to Portreath with what they have achieved over the last few years. When they do get up into the higher league, and come face to face with other teams that ARE paying their players, things will start to even out, and trophies will be a bit thinner on the ground. That is when their work will really start.

Link to comment

Certainly. It started by paying £1 into the kitty upon arrival at the club (as do all our players). Then, once changed and before going out to the game, we each pick a ping-pong ball out of a hat, each one with a number on it, but one with a "****" on it. Guess what, I picked out the one with a **** on it, hence being this weeks ****. The numbers, by the way, represent the shirt numbers, and our first scorer earns the guy that picked that number out the hat, half the kitty. The other half goes towards the club. At the end of the game, after having a shower, paid our £3 subs for playing and so on, the **** is invited to deck a pint of lager as quickly as possible (and I thought I did a fair job of that) then spin round a pole stuck into the ground until very dizzy. The idea is then to kick a ball that has been placed about 10 yards away. Of course, you tend to fall over a couple of times in attempting this. Furthermore this Saturday happened to be rather wet and muddy afternoon, but as it is all for a good cause, I had no problems in undertaking this task to everyones apparent entertainment. So, that about sums it up. It is all about raising money for the club to enable us to keep going. In a nutshell, I paid £1 to pick out a ping-pong ball that ended up with me covered in mud.

So your pr1ck before you even kick a ball...priceless...sounds good for team moral though....fairplay.

I thought you might have been awarded the honour for missing an open goal, scoring an own goal or being megged..keep up the good work

Link to comment

Oh no no no, it's not awarded for something you do, merely the luck of the draw. God forbid, if it was for being a ****, I'd be out there every week, and no other chap would ever get the chance, and that just wouldn't be on.

It's all in the spirit of fun and a healthy cause, a bunch of mates playing football together on a Saturday afternoon, but sadly, as it can cost us about £70 odd to host a home game (and with 2 teams that a home match every week), we have to raise the funds in some way or other to be able to enjoy ourselves. Hence, what better way than to chip in to the kitty (outside of the regular subs you understand), have a chance of picking out the winning ball and buying yourself an extra pint after the game, and hopefully watching one of your mates make a **** of himself.

I'm sorry if a lot of that has gone over your head, never mind, enjoy your football.
