St Newlyn East AFC
Godolphin 5 - 4 St Newlyn East Great game with both sides going for it and everything you want from a 'local derby' - plenty of goals, strong challenges, 'a little bit of niggle' and lots of good football! Newlyn nearly opened the scoring when Ollie Downing's curling effort hit the post but the G saw themselves in a 2 goal lead after 30 minutes from a well worked goal and a low direct free kick following a soft challenge on the edge of the area. Newlyn lost their keeper Joe Sweet just before half time following a collision which resulted in Saints stopper suffering a complete break of his collar bone. Newlyn reduced the areas early in the second half from Probert only to frustratingly gift Godolphin 2 goals with massive defensive errors. The G scored their fifth when a near post corner was flicked in over the Newlyn defence into the net. Newlyn then threw everything at the G in a frenetic final 15 minutes which saw them hit the woodwork again but also score 3 goals from Probert (2) and London to set up a dramatic finish but unfortunately time ran out for them. We wish our keeper Joe Sweet all the best and hope he's back in action again soon.
Jeff's Telling
Well done to Callington Town joint managers Paul Sanders and Mark Whttaker for their team's win against Gunnislake in Duchy 1 last night. Having taken over the running of the Callington Town 3rd team midway through last season, when otherwise it looked like the team could fold, and being winless and suffering some heavy defeats and relegation from Duchy Premier, the team achieved a league win for the first time in more than a year last night. Richard Rundle
St Minver res 2-2 St Columb A fair result on a showery night in Rock, the visitors twice coming behind to grab a point. Both teams looked rusty but nowhere near as rusty as the referee who constantly baffled both teams by his decision making (including denying St Minver what looked to everyone, including the miscreants, a clear cut penalty when the keeper and one defender converged on an attacker and wiped him out inside the box). I think both teams had lost respect for his decisions well before the end. He did employ the sin bin, once for each side, the first time I have seen it used.
