St Stephen in Brannel 3 St Dennis 1

Attendance: 26

In perfect footballing weather at Brannel School, Saints deservedly came out on top in a well-contested local derby in which their determined visitors played a full part. The relatively narrow 3g pitch allowed the home team to abandon their usual 4-5-1 formation which has served them well this season in favour of a more attacking 4-3-3, but they were initially unable to create the number of chances suggested by their talented midfield. However, on the quarter hour, a searching through ball inside the opposition right back allowed Saints' outside left to steer his shot underneath the goalkeeper. Despite their best efforts a second goal did not materialise before, against the run of play, St Dennis equalised through a lob from distance that deceived the otherwise impressive home keeper. St Stephen resolved to treat this as merely a temporary setback and almost hit back within seconds when a fierce drive from twenty yards was deflected wide. They were not to be denied as, from the resulting outswinging corner, the left-half planted a firm header into the roof of the net.

With a slight breeze and a bright sun now behind them, Saints were confident they would be able to retain the initiative. Sure enough they soon took command of the second half, but were let down by profligacy in front of goal. Several chances went begging, although much credit must go to the visitors who defended strongly, and who always looked dangerous on the break. St Stephen therefore celebrated their decisive third goal twelve minutes from time, a cool finish from close range following a jinky run, with visible relief.

I have wondered before whether the forum needs a Youth and Junior sub-forum. I have heard all the arguments against; polluting young and impressionable minds with the outrageous opinions of the likes of Older, SSS, me, and the like? But still, fixtures and reports do turn up from time to time on the other sub-forums and, in order to encourage participation, could really do with their own home. Unless there is already such a specialist forum which I don't know about.

Its the common sense we speak that is needed.
