noahc
on 07/10/61 st blazey won 4-1 at newton abbot spurs, the quirk is in the goalscorers names: derek billing, brian russell, brian tallamy and john isbell. for mike odgers, unbeaten falmouth played a friendly on 16/12/61 against the formidable hms puma at plymouth's brickfields. puma recently beat swl side newton abbot spurs 6-2 but falmouth continued their unbeaten run with a 7-4 win. johnny russell, danny sullivan, geoff peach, johnny penny, an own goal and a peter bennett brace were the town scorers with devlin, neil imrie (2) and a roy mallett own goal for the homesters. in the fa amateur cup, following a 4-4 draw at lux park, saltash thrashed liskeard 14-3 in the replay and the newspaper headline stated "saltash go ". 53 years on it gets a childish giggle! Mike Odgers
Thanks, thats another to add to the Falmouth results history which I didn't have on record.HMS Puma was commissioned in Plymouth in 1961 and was on Icelandic patrol following "The Cod War"-Was Neil Imrie part of the Naval personnel or a guest player? noahc
keepers becoming heroes at the other end of the pitch became a trend. prior to this and to my knowledge david laity of falmouth became the first keeper to score when he was forced out of goal through injury. don stillwell of saltash netted a penalty in the 50s. on 19/10/63 and with his team beating bugle 4-0 torpoint keeper fred netherton was nominated to take a penalty but missed. on 09/11 after going off with concussion, nanpean goalie brian mitchell returned as a passenger and netted in a 7-2 home success over helston. injury again played a part on boxing day when barrington of launceston had to surrender his jersey following an arm injury. he scored one of their goals in a 2-8 loss at st blazey. in 1964/65, on 31/10/64 liskeards loyal number one joe partridge took up position on the left wing following injury and scored the equaliser and winner against plymouth united in the p&d league. three occurances in 11 days happened in april 1965. st austell defeated helston 7-1 on 07/04/65 and the helston scorer was named as c.williams. keeper colin williams started his career as a striker who played in goal when needed. helston had several williams's in their team so it could be a mistype. on 13/04/65 and with an 8-0 lead over truro city, plymouth argyle keeper john leiper had a penalty but shot it shockingly wide! in their last home game five days later goalkeeper shipley scored argyles final goal in their 7-0 win over helston. it was the last swl goal scored at home park. the highest aggregate for goals i have found in the swl is 16 with helston being on the wrong end of a liskeard 15-1 win but on 30/11/63 i found a rare 14 goal swlc game in which saltash lost 6-8 against st lukes college. on 08/09/65 a friendly at poltair park saw st austell play old st austell. the oldies played the last 20 minutes with 18 players and two keepers. with the score at 6-6 for a long time brian morgan tried to change codes and caught the ball giving the old boys a 7-6 win! noahc
the 1966/67 south western league cup final at st austell between truro and st blazey finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. with a replay presumed, st blazey left the pitch and proceded to change when they were informed that extra time would be played. on a wet evening, they refused. the league chairman mr james put the blame on charles truscott the referee for failing to inform the teams, although posters provided by the league also failed to mention the possibility of extra time. truro paraded the cup as winners but after a meeting, it was decided that the trophy would be shared. st blazey received a set of winners medals in september, even though five of the squad had moved on. karaoke if you are who mike says then in 1967 as devon county keeper you moved from newton spurs to liskeard. oh and you had hair!!!
