Liskeard Athletic 0-2 Callington Town

Last season's ECPL runners up started the season with a tough away fixture at local rivals Liskeard in front of a healthy sized crowd which must have been approaching the 100 mark. Liskeard had suffered a 4-0 defeat at champions Torpoint Athletic on the opening Saturday, Town were without a fixture.

Callington started the game playing down the slope at Lux Park, and had the better of the opening exchanges, but without extending the home keeper too much. Liskeard, playing with a lone striker, were restricted to breakaways, but midway through the first half, following a well constructed move, were unlucky when a thunderous and sweetly struck volley rebounded from the frame of the goal - probably if the shot had been slightly miss- hit they would have been in front.

However Callington continued in the ascendancy, and just before half time, after a period of sustained pressure on the home goal, Billy Coton hit a shot which just had enough on it to nestle in the far corner of the net.

So 1-0 to Town at half time...

The second half started fairly evenly, with Liskeard putting several dangerous low crosses into the penalty, and Callington moving the ball swiftly and confidently around the pitch, particularly up both wings, where the home team were conceding a lot of space.

Callington went two up on 68 minutes when Jarryd Kelly was on hand to rifle home when the home keeper was unable to hold onto a shot.

After this, Liskeard rarely threatened, and Callington saw out the game to register a deserved 3 points.

Callington, who once again have a strong and skillful squad,  will look to maintain their form at home to Plymstock United this Saturday, Liskeard after two tough opening games will be looking forward to a much better season after flirting with relegation for the last two seasons
