steve wints Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Can anyone tell me what are the records for the biggest crowds of games played in cornwall???????
cornishteddyboy Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 In 1949 Penzance played in the Senior Cup final in front of 15,000. In 1959 the crowd was down to just over 4,000 The 1970-71Combination League Cup final between St Just and Illogan RBL held at Penzance had a record crowd of over 1000, double the previous record and the gate receipts were £120. This crowd figure was broken again at the 1973-74 final when the same 2 teams played once again at Penzance in front of 1500 people.
Mike Odgers Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Cornwall senior cup Finals at Poltair Park St. Austell after the War have reached 12,000. Bickland Park had 8000 for the F A CUP with Oxford United. 1962 Pre Season friendly Falmouth v Aston Villa 3000
Guest nets Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 I remember somebody telling me that Stanley Matthews once played an exhibition match at St Austell in front of 20000, anyone else ever heard of this?
Martin Mullis Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 Bodmin played Falmouth at Priory Park in 1972(I think!) on a hot sunday afternoon in a crowd which was in excess of 3000 and the game was an absolute cracker 4-4. Also at Priory in 1993 approx 4000 watched a pre-season friendly with then Premiership Sheffield Wednesday, (Chris Waddle, Nigel Worthington, John Sheridan, Nigel Pearson etc.), the result not so close 2-9

TTom Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 36,232 - Truro City v AFC Totton ?? Of which at least 10,000 were from Cornwall! :drink:
DanBlazey Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 You'll think I've lost the plot with this one, but the figure 40,000 and Penzance sticks in my mind. I remember seeing it in one of my old programmes; I tried having a look for it last night, but with no success. I could be wrong mind.
cornishteddyboy Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Dan you might be thinking of 4,500 when Pz played Wimbeldon in a pre-season friendly. Vinny Jones, etc and the rest of the crazy gang. I wonder what the ground capacity limits are for Cornwall football grounds now. No big crowds now - Health and Safety would stop us being packed in like sardines.
oldasitgets Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 At Nancegollan, Crowntown once had eight spectators. (If you count the 2 dogs, the 3 kids on the playground and a tractor driver watching as he drove past.) (And the two subs.)
Guest Postie Pidge Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 I think the 15000 at the 1949 St Austell vs Penzance Cornwall Senior Cup Final at Poltair is the record AT A CORNISH GAME
