PENZANCE 2 TRURO CITY RESERVES 1

The Magpies became the second team to complete their fixtures (after Bude Town), recording a third straight win to soar to a season’s high position of seventh and sign off on a thoroughly satisfactory campaign.
Taylor McNally had an early chance for Truro but was thwarted by an excellent block from Will Trenoweth. Thereafter, Penzance were in the ascendency. Michael Fitchett, Mark Vercesi and Ollie Butler all went close before the deadlock was broken in the 13th minute. A James Butler corner from the left was cleared only as far as Vercesi who smashed the ball home via a deflection.
Another flag kick almost handed a goal to Vercesi’s centre-back partner, but Liam Andrew was unlucky to see his far post header come back off the woodwork. Truro were then reduced to ten players, Paul Turpin seeing red for chopping down last man Charlie Willis. Penzance capitalised almost immediately, Willis playing a delightful one-two with Ollie Butler before dinking the ball past Morgan Jones to extend the lead.
Alfie Turner tested Jones with a shot straight after the restart, but thereafter Penzance were limited to just one more effort from distance – a piledriver by Jacob Trudgeon that fizzed just past the post. Orchestrated by the veteran Ian Gosling in midfield, City’s ten men bossed the second half. They reduced the arrears fifteen minutes from time when Fin Harrison cut in from the right flank and despatched a fine left foot shot. The Magpies were indebted to a good save by Trenoweth from Gosling right at the death for their fourth away win of the season (though staged at Penlee Park, this was Truro’s home fixture).
“First half we were fantastic. We controlled that - some of the stuff we played was great,” said manager Ashley Waters afterwards. “Second half we looked like the side with ten men. Credit to them – they came at us and we lost our energy levels. But we’ve learned so much this season. The players have been incredibly respectful and bought into what Matt James and I are trying do.”
