Gary Hocking
Something special could be happening at Poltair Park this season. Following yesterday’s win against league leaders Ilminster, St Austell are now just 5 points off the lead with two games in hand. Promotion to National League Div One South West is a real possibility, where St Austell would join the likes of Southampton, Swindon, Cheltenham, Bournemouth and Exeter. St Austell’s next game (3rd April) should be straightforward - home to Bideford who are yet to pick up a point this season - but then they finish the season with four straight away games at Bishops Lydeard, Marine Academy Plymouth, Sherborne and finishing at Forest Green Rovers on 1st May. A tough run-in, but a massive prize awaits if those games go to form. Thecupfootballblogger
Thecupfootballblogger
In amongst all the other football stories this season this one appears to have gone under the radar a bit. Just being in the shake-up for promotion is a great achievement by St Austell. I, for one, don't know much about the team or their history. Could someone enlighten me? Cheers. Can recommend giving it a listen - it’s the first interview on that edition. As well as St Austell’s great league performances they also had a really good FA Cup run this season beating Marine Academy Plymouth, AEK Boco and Torquay United before falling just short away to Argyle. Gary Hocking
St Austell got the expected home win against bottom of the table Bideford today though it would have been a bold forecaster who would have predicted the 17-0 score line. A big shock at Forest Green Rovers though where league leaders Ilminster went down 3-0. Ilminster are still top with 38 points having played 16 of their 18 games games but St Austell are now only 2 points behind with 2 games in hand. That potential promotion to National League Division One South West is creeping ever-closer. Thecupfootballblogger
bighairydave
Fair play to Bideford who travelled down with only 9 players. Gary Hocking and Thecupfootballblogger
Gary Hocking
With St Austell and Ilminster both winning today (2-1 away to Bishops Lydeard and 3-2 at home to Torquay respectively) and with Ilminster’s one remaining game being the closest thing in football to a guaranteed three points (away to Bideford - yet to earn a single point this season and with a goal difference of minus 155 from 17 games) St Austell need six points from their remaining three games to clinch promotion. Next up, away to Marine Academy Plymouth on Wednesday evening.
Gary Hocking
Great piece on St Austell here: https://impetusfootball.org/2022/04/14/afc-st-austell-big-progress-in-cornwall/ Thecupfootballblogger
Gary Hocking
Ilminster finished their league campaign with a 4-0 win at Bideford tonight so St Austell now know exactly what they need to do to gain promotion to National League Div 1 SW. With two games to go St Austell are 2 points behind Ilminster with a four goal goal difference deficit. Win either of their away games at Sherborne on 24 April or Forest Green Rovers on 1 May and St Austell will be promoted, fail to win both and it’s second place. Gary Hocking
St Austell suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat at Sherborne Town this afternoon and now need all 3 points from their final game next Sunday at Forest Green Rovers to secure promotion. St Austell had a disastrous 1st half going in 3-0 down, then despite rallying with 2 late goals went down to their first defeat of the season.
