Doms 3-1 callington 

Doms started well out the blocks and found themselves 2 up inside 5 mins with Harvey Barrett notching the first after the callington goalkeeper spilled a shot into his path. 2 Doms new boys involved in the second goal with Adam parry being brought down inside the box just minutes later and Stu Fort converted cooly from the spot. Doms then took their foot off the pedal and callington grew some confidence whilst Doms grew frustrated which resulted in a goal for callington on the hour mark. The game was then sealed when Pete styring knocked a ball over the top for Kieran Prescott who fired a volley past the callington keeper to ensure the 3 points were staying with the home side.

The Hurlers started their league campaign with an eagerly anticipated local derby versus neighbours Mousehole, under floodlights at Trungle Parc. Mousehole we’re top of the St Piran League at the time of its curtailment last season, whilst Ludgvan were second in the Cornwall Combination League. Ludgvan are looking forward to testing themselves at a higher level. As you’d expect from a derby there were some tasty challenges and I think it’s fair to say the game was a good advertisement for the league and step 7, with some good quality football on show. The pitch was in splendid condition and both sides tried to play out from the back. The game was end to end from start to finish, and credit to both sides who tried everything to secure all three points. It was the visitors who took the lead when the lively Jacob Trudgeon coolly slotted home from 8 yards following a melee of shots. Joe Davies, who was excellent at left back, launched a long free kick into the box, Steve Hancock headed superbly goal-ward, hitting the underside of the crossbar, the ball ricocheted out, then striker Danny Earl headed towards goal and home ‘keeper Elwell punched it out only to Trudgeon to finally fire home through a crowd of players to make it 0-1. 

One man on the pitch you do not want to gift the ball to in the box is Gerens James. It was the Hurlers Legend who pounced first onto a loose ball to equalise in the 44th minute to score his 500th career goal. Despite such an achievement, James showed his class by not celebrating against his old club. 

The second half continued to be an entertaining encounter. Both teams competitive in the tackle and both trying to create chances. Ludgvan got themselves into good positions without really troubling the young Seagulls’ ‘keeper. Whereas at the other end, Ralph and James ensured Hurlers’ debutant ‘keeper, Zak Freeman was alert. Freeman had a great game pulling off some great point blank saves. On minute 55, Skipper, Kameron Collins, was adjudged to have brought down a Mousehole player and the referee pointed to the spot. James stepped up and made it 2-1 to the home side and 501 for his personal tally. 

With 20 minutes to go, Ludgvan threw everything at it, including the kitchen sink. Adopting a 3-4-3 formation; the versatile outstanding JJ Simmonds slotted in at centre back demonstrating the all out attack mindset of the team. Despite crossing, creating and getting a number of corners, the ball just wouldn’t drop for the Hurlers and Mousehole edged a competitive fixture; one I’m sure the neutrals would have enjoyed.

A great showing in a higher league against last year’s top team. With the likes of Billy Edwards, Ryan Gendall, Ross Badcock, Caleb Marsden, Nath Goodspeed, Pasha Wilson and Harry Tonkin all to return at some point in the coming weeks and more of the same effort, I’m sure we will reap the rewards. We appreciate the support shown tonight. Onto Illogan Royal British Legion Football and Social Club away Saturday, 3pm KO.
