Mike Odgers Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Tonight at Bickland Park St.Austell will be making their first visit for almost 4 years since climbing up and out of the CSWP Div.1West League. It was September 2006 when in the Old S.W.L. Falmouth triumphed 7-0 This will be the 93rd.League meeting between the clubs which all began in 1951 on the very first day of the newly formed South Western League which ended 3-3 played at Union Corner,Falmouth To add a bit of 'spice'to tonights encounter I have counted 6 former Town players in the 'Lily-Whites' squad
cornishteddyboy Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 For the floating supporter, why go watch mid-table teams? The biggest game in Cornwall this evening will be 4th v 6th in the Premiership when St Blazey visit Penzance at Penlee Park. Gates open early for a 7:30pm kick-off.
Suebo Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Should be an interesting game at Bickland tonight. Hopefully St Austell will play for a full 90 minutes
Tony Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Looking forward to it! St.Austell will have to defend better than Saturday if they are to get anything tonight but it will be a good test. Bickland hasn't been a particularly happy hunting ground in my experience over the years but i do remember visiting for an evening fixture in the early/mid 80s when Falmouth were pretty well unbeatable at home, being battered for 90 minutes but winning 1-0 thanks to a Chris Visick goal....I remember it well because some bugger nicked my radio/cassette from my Mark1 Ford Escort that was parked in the car park!! Perhaps Mike can pinpoint the date from his records?
ozzellfan Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 I remember our last game at Bickland Park when we lost 7-0. We were 6-0 down at half-time and I'm ashamed to say that I had a hissy fit and chucked my file down on the ground, only to see it fall into the brambles and gorse behind the bank. I was eventually rescued complete with several cuts and scratches! Hopefully this evening's game should be an intersting encounter, although I would echo Tony's point as regards our defending. Looking forward to going back to Bickland Park this evening, not a happy hunting ground but always a nice ground to go to.

[/quote Tony- Without looking into detail 1984-85 saw 1-0 win for St.Austell Another date I remember was 1987-88 when Falmouth were defending a 60+ unbeaten league run at Bickland and managed to salvage a point when Super Sub Duncan Powell netted in stoppage time for a 3-3 draw. The last St.Austell win at Bickland was 2004-05, 1-2 and I think they were managed by my life long pal John Peters who was my boyhood neighbour in the Pengegon Prefabs. Also at Bickland- what season did an unknown teenage winger named Bowker(Andy) cause havoc on the right flank for St.Austell?
Rob Hosking Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 I remember a falmouth town visit to poltair that ended 9-1 to st austell 2002-2003 I think
Tony Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 Thanks Mike, 84/5 sounds right. Bowks did start his SWL 'career' with St.Austell as far as I know and was very tricky. Back in the early 90s at one point we had Bowker, Ginter & Legg who were all lightening quick and if/when they were on form could be unplayable.
