St Day 3-0 Penzance Reserves

Two late goals flattered St Day as both teams struggled to find their shooting boots in a dour game at Vogue Hill. This was probably Penzance’s worst performance of the season and even though they had a few half-chances, hitting the woodwork four times, they never really threatened the St Day keeper.

Craig Nicholls between the sticks for Penzance was the busier of the keepers and kept the score-line respectable.

St Day have the first chance of the match with a 30yd free kick but the ball flies straight to the keeper for an easy grab.

Penzance nearly score when an Ashley Thomas corner is flicked onto the bar by Jimmy England and away to safety. Then a Ryan Holland shot hits the post from a cross.

The game closes down until the 20th minute when St Day take the lead. They work the ball down their left, cross to the edge of the box where Perran Cooke lets fly with a low shot which goes in at the near post. 1-0 after 20mins.

A free kick hits the side netting of the Penzance goal before a cross pitch ball sees St Day’s Nathan Taylor shoot just wide with a cross goal volley. Another St Day break down the right results in a crossed ball volleyed well over the bar.

Penzance have a chance to get on score sheet when they get a free kick 30yds out in the centre. Ashley Thomas steps up, fires over the wall but the keeper cleverly finger-tips it up onto the bar and over. Unfortunately much to Penzance’s frustration the ref indicates a goal-kick and St Day clear.

Then Nicholls makes the first of his good saves. A St Day corner on the right sees a long ball to the back post. The striker heads in from 8yds and the keeper makes a great one-handed diving save to clear.

Penzance’s Liam Devine is booked for a sliding tackle.

The half starts off quietly as both teams seem to retreat behind the ball.

St Day work down the right, cross, the ball is flicked on and Taylor shoots just wide of the back post.

Penzance get a corner on the right. A long ball is met at the back post by Bradley Wills but his strong header hits the upright and flies away to safety.

The Penzance keeper has to make another good save from a Perran Cooke shot after a good move down the left. Then Nicholls has to save again, this time when he parries a shot then grabs the ball of the strikers foot whilst under pressure.

But St Day seem to settle for their one goal advantage as Penzance make a couple of substitutions and push forward. For ten minutes or so, St Day have everyone behind the ball and they don’t venture into the Penzance half but the Magpies fail to find a way through.

Then with a few minutes left St Day break down the right. The ball is crossed into the box but the keeper parries the resultant volley only to see the rebound poked into the net from 6yds by Lee Duffield. 2-0 after 88mins.

Then a couple of minutes later they are awarded a penalty. Darren Holsey and a St Day player jump for the ball but Darren is a bit strong trying to head the ball. The ref indicates a spot kick. Penzance’s Jamie Devine gets booked for protesting that the incident was outside to box. Perran Cooke steps up and he knocks it to the keepers left. 3-0 after 90+1 mins.

The ref ends the game before the teams kick-off again.

Penzance’s side lacked experience. Seven players in the starting line-up had played less than 10 games for the combo team this season, with three of them playing less than 5 games.

Penzance Man of the Match for the second week running was keeper Craig Nicholls. Some good saves kept the score down.

Penzance – Craig Nicholls, Liam Bennett, Steve Hancock, Darren Holsey, Ashley Thomas, Ian Philips, Ryan Holland, Jimmy England, Gary Matthews, Steve Burt, Liam Devine

Subs – Bradley Wills (Holland 52), Wade Brown (England 65), Jamie Devine (Philips 73), Tom Withecombe, Charlie Penny

Corner count St Day 3-2 Penzance (1-2 1st half)
