THE PHIL SMITH MEMORIAL MATCH

An Annual fixture has been arranged in memory of former St. Blazey defender Phil Smith who was tragically killed recently in an accident on a training exercise with the Royal Marines.

Phil, who was only 26, was an extremely popular figure in Cornish football circles having captained and held the record number of appearances for the Duchy Youth team.

His senior clubs were Falmouth Town, St Austell and St Blazey and it is perhaps fitting that the last two will play in the game that is planned for the last Saturday before the start of every season.

The game this season will take place at Blaise Park on Saturday, August 2 with a 3.00 pm kick-off and proceeds from the match will be donated to a local youth football club or association (yet to be decided).

A presentation to both teams and the officials, and the inaugural Phil Smith Trophy which has been kindly donated by Rowett Insurance Group, will be made prior to the match followed by live entertainment in the evening with extremely popular local band Shameless (www.shameless-band.co.uk).

Please help to support this match not only in light of the extremely sad and tragic circumstances but to help raise funds for a local youth football club/association.

It's a shame that the game falls on the same day as football remembers another 'great', Dave Gardner. His memorial day final is at Falmouth with two games featuring Dave's former clubs.
