Launceston Cup Semi Final Monday 6th May

LIFTON 3 – 2 LANREATH      Att 150

Isaac Parnell               Conor Bone

Dave Sharpe               Callum McGhee (pen)

Sean Tucker

Lifton reached the final of the Launceston Cup for the first time since 1954 and now face Holsworthy in the final and historically it will be the first ever all Devon final!

Lanreath started the stronger and had a good chance inside the two minutes with the shot being deflected wide, and they continued to pepper the Lifton goal with shots, but the Lifton defenders put everything they had to block the efforts.

After 20 minutes the Lifton resistance was finally broken when the ball was fed out to Callum Bone on the left wing and he made space for himself before squeezing a shot home at the near post. Lanreath had at least two other golden chances to increase their lead, but Daniel Hoare superbly blocked the ball at least once whilst his brother Chris also kept Lanreath at bay.

However, Lifton hit back quickly within three minutes when the Lifton forwards worked the ball along the edge of the area and the final pass found Isaac Parnell free inside the  box and he hit superb rising shot high into net across the despairing dive of the Lanreath  ’keeper.

The scores level heading towards half time Lifton suddenly score two quick goals. Firstly, a Leon Trudgeon corner to the far post was headed back into the centre of the goal area by Ralf Finnimore and Dave Sharp was handily placed to head home from close range on 42 minutes.

One minute later Lifton were two goals up when a foul in the penalty area resulted in a spot kick which Sean Tucker confidently struck past the Lanreath ‘keeper.

H.T Lifton 3-1 Lanreath

Lanreath could feel slightly aggrieved at trailing at half time and came out eager to make amends in the second period and dominated much of the play, but again the Lifton defenders literally put their bodies on the line to deny Lanrerath’s forwards.

With the Lifton defence remaining solid it took a penalty to break their resolve when Daniel Hoare made another block, but he was adjudged to have blocked the ball with his hand and Callum McGhee fired home the penalty despite Chris Hoare nearly saving the spot kick.

This then set up  a nervy final ten minutes for the Lifton team, but it also meant as Lanreath pushed forward in numbers they were left exposed in defence and Lifton might have increased their lead if their forwards had been more clinical.
