St Erme 2 Probus 2 (o.g. and Sam Bullen)

Probus played down the slope in the first half and took the lead after 6 minutes when a long throw was flicked on by Dan Vincent and the home keeper somehow punched the ball into his own net for an own goal. To their credit St Erme came straight back and Sam Jones, in goal for Probus, made a good save from the home forward and still inside the first 10 minutes, they should have been level, when a long ball was controlled by the St Erme forward, but his shot was well saved, when he really should have scored. Probus came back and good interplay between Dan Vincent and Sam Bullen resulted in the ball being laid off to Justin Trebilcock, whose shot went well over the bar. The visitors had a long range shot by Jeremy Pascoe hit the bar, and Sam Bullen tapped home the rebound, only for the linesman to flag for offside, much to the despair of Probus. It looked like he was onside, but the linesman had the best view. They did increase their lead a minute later, when a straight free kick by Adam Bishop was flicked home with his head by Sam Bullen. Dan Vincent had the chance to increase the lead further, but he scuffed his shot wide when clean through. 0-2 at halftime.

It felt like Probus needed a third goal to make the game safe, but they knew it would be harder playing up the slope in the second half. St Erme started the second half much better than they did in the first and had a shot wide after 5 minutes and they also had a long range freekick go wide of the post. The warnings kept on coming for Probus, and the home side came the closest they had come to reducing the arrears, when a free kick was deflected into the path of the home forward, who prodded the ball towards goal, only for Marting Bishop to clear off the line. St Erme got the goal back they deserved midway through the half when a cross from the right was let through his legs by Sam Jones for another goalkeeping own goal. Probus could, and probably should have increased their lead again, when an Adam Bishop free kick, found the unmarked Sam Bullen, who headed goal wards but straight at the home keeper, who saved well with his legs. A minute later they should have gone 2 goals ahead again, when substitute Jack Truscott was brought down from behind, inside the box, by the home player for a penalty. Up stepped Dan Vincent, but his penalty was well saved by the home keeper, diving to his right. Probus have now missed several penalties this season. Back came the home side when a cross from the right was hit against the bar. St Erme didn’t have to wait long to get the goal they deserved when a cross field ball found their attacker. The ball bounced up and hit the forwards hand, and he finished well across Sam Jones. The visitors were incensed that the goal was allowed to stand, but the referee can only give what he can see, and the goal was no more than the home side deserved. Probus huffed and puffed to try and get a winner, but to no avail. 2-2 final score.

In my opinion, a draw was probably a fair result, with Probus the better team in the first half and St Erme, much the better in the second. The referee, Brian Charles, had a good game and tried to allow the game to flow wherever he could. The match itself had a lack of quality, but that was probably due to the difficult conditions – the wind was very strong, and conditions underfoot were very slippery. Probus will be disappointed to have dropped 2 points, but I’m sure that if you had said to the management team at the beginning of the season that they would be unbeaten in the league after 13 games, they would have taken it!. Division 3 is shaping up to be an interesting league, with Holmans able to go level on points with Probus if they win their 2 games in hand, and Dropship only 2 points behind, if they win their 4 games in hand. The league is very competitive and lots of teams are capable of taking points off each other from what I've seen. One thing is for sure, Probus will need to improve on this display if they have any aspirations of winning the league.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

Match Report 🏆

St Erme 2-2 Probus

St Erme played host to table toppers Probus as they looked to build on last weeks positive result against Carharrack.

St Erme started with pretty much the same 11 as last week with the only the 2 changes being Sam R coming in for his debut to replace the absent skipper Kyle S and Max P coming in up top to replace Lewis B.

The saints started the more positive playing some great football causing the Probus defence problems but were unable to make the pressure count and Probus took the lead with a strange goal coming from their throw in which got flicked on and Cam L and Dan M had a mixup and it ended up in the back of the net.

The saints didn’t drop their heads though and continued to play the more positive football with Freddie M coming close and Max P having a decent chance to Lob the keeper.

The visitors had the ball in the back of the net again after a long range after hit the crossbar and fell to the striker for a tap in but the saints were let off by the offside call.

Probus did eventually double their lead not long after when a free kick was clipped in and headed home by their skipper. The saints then finished the first half the better but went in 2-0 down but knew they were still in the game after a very positive half of football.

The Saints came out for the second half and  continued to play the better football creating numerous of chances but not being able to find the net.

They soon found the goal they  deserved goal when Jared W played Thierry M down the right hand side which he  then crossed in and the Visitors keeper had a mix up and has knocked it into his own net.

Probus was then looking to restore there 2 goal lead and had a great opportunity when the striker had a close range effort saved brilliantly by keeper Dan

Probus were then awarded a penalty when Jared W clipped their left winger in the box, up stepped Their number 9 who went to the bottom left but Dan M made another sublime save to keep the saints in the game.

The saints gained confidence from the missed penalty and continued to Battle well and found a second to equalise when goal machine Thierry M was played in with a lovely cross from Freddie M which he chested down and fired low into the left hand corner.

The saints were penned in their own half the last 10 minutes but held strong to earn a well earned point against the league leaders.

MOTM today was Sam R who had a great game in the middle of the park on his debut, also special mention to Dan M for his wonderful penalty save to keep the saints in the game.
