Lizard Argyle 5 Probus 5 (Sam Bullen 2, Ben Emmett, Adam Bishop, Connor Rhodes)

Both teams started with outfield players in goal, but, in my opinion, they couldn't be faulted for any of the goals conceded by their teams. The pitch looked good, despite the rain that we have had recently, and the wet surface was always going to favour attackers rather than defenders.

Probus started on the front foot and Sam Bullen had 2 early headers that went wide, both from Joe Emmett crosses, who himself shot over the bar soon after. The visitors did take the lead after 15 minutes when a poor back pass went straight to Sam Bullen who kept his composure before slotting home. 5 minutes later Ben Emmett took a shot from 20 yards that deflected past the home keeper for 0-2. The home team had their first attacking play after 25 minutes when Tom Rhodes, in the visitors goal, pushed the ball over the bar and he also did the same from the resulting corner. 5 minutes later he again made a decent save and from the corner the ball hit the crossbar. After 36 minutes Probus were down to 10 men when Martin Bishop pulled a hamstring and hobbled off. Before they could get a substitute ready, from a corner the ball pinballed around the box before the home team scored low into the net, despite Probus having several chances to clear the ball. The home team could have drawn level just before halftime, but Tom Rhodes made another good save, and then a minute before the break, Adam Bishop hit a rocket of a half volley into the roof of the net from 20 yards, giving the home keeper no chance. 1-3 at halftime.

The rain was intermittently very heavy in the first half, so a few of us decided to head into the clubhouse for a hot drink and to try and warm up! The beers on offer looked more tempting than returning to watch the second half, but we somehow dragged ourselves away and walked out into the rain again!

The home team could have got a goal back 5 minutes into the second half, but Tom Rhodes again saved when one on one with the striker. Probus had a few half chances through Sam Bullen, Joe Emmett and then Gabby Camara-Xavier Rojas hit the post after a one-two with Dan Vincent. 20 minutes into the half George Truscott had a shot well saved by the home keeper, but the ball was kept alive and Sam Bullen poked home from inside the box. A minute later and a good pass by George Truscott found Connor Rhodes on the right and he cut in and finished well to make it 1-5, and surely the points were safe for Probus....Lizard had other ideas though and kept fighting. A minute after going 5-1 down, the recently introduced sub for Lizard finished well with his left foot on the volley from inside the box on the angle. A couple of minutes later and Jer Pascoe and Andy Shear collided when trying to defend a high ball in the visitors defence, and as play went on Harry Vincent handled inside the box for a penalty. Tom Rhodes went the right way, but he couldn't get his hand to the well struck low penalty. 3-5 and still 20 minutes to play. 5 minutes later a high goal kick wasn't dealt with by the visitors centre back and it bounced over the backline and a home forward slotted home. A few minutes later and it was 5-5 when a home player slotted home from the left of the box. There were still 10 minutes to play and it looked like there would only be one winner after Lizard had come back from 1-5 down. The last 10 minutes were fairly uneventful, but the home keeper was penalised right at the end for a handling infringement inside the box, given Probus the chance to have an effort at goal from an indirect free kick. Justin Trebilcock rolled the ball to Sam Bullen, but his effort was charged down. They also had a corner that skipper John Penhaligon headed wide when it looked like he could, and should, have done better. Final score 5-5.

Lizard thoroughly deserved their point because even at 1-5 they never gave up and kept battling all afternoon. Probus will be massively disappointed with their performance when leading by 4 goals. The referee, Ryan Price, was excellent throughout the game. I worked out today that it's probably more enjoyable playing in the rain than it is stood around watching! No game for Probus next week, so the next game is the Junior Cup tie, away at Mawnan Reserves in 2 weeks, in which they will have to play much better to progress into the next round.

After being very comfortable away, I wanted to use this game to give some of my fringe players a run out and also try different things tactically. First of all, I had to play an outfield player in goal, but he was very good in 1v1 situations. The heavy rain was terrible, especially for us on the sideline just standing there. We played some good football first half, which resulted in some really good team goals. Goals for hayden W to grab 2 and a penalty for Alfie R.
In the second half, I brought on a lot of my normal starters. Which really worked scoring another 6 goals. A brilliant cross from the corner for Reuben T to head home, 2 for archie B, hayden completing his hattrick, benji with a superb effort from outside the box to the top bins, and young Charlie P getting his first game in adults football.

Man of the match was Sam Spencer. Really controlled the midfield in holding midfield, allowing two number 10s really getting forward.

The game was very well officiated by experienced ref George. Who wasn't afraid to over turn line man decisions, which he did on a couple of occasions, leading to a goal for Hayden.

No **** of the day as there were very few mistakes.

Went out after to celebrate callum J 18th and Toby M 21st birthday was hilarious and great for the fines tin with loads of beer induced betting on pool.

Home again next week to Perranwell.  2.30 kick off.
