I decided to take in the game last night down at Penlee Park. Bit of a longer drive for me, but having watched very little competitive football over the past year or so, it was well worth the journey in my opinion. Always nice to grab some fish and chips on the promenade.

Penzance lineup as expected, very few changes from the past couple of years. A mix of experience and youth, Kev Lawrence and Gary Bell in midfield, Wade Brown leading the line with youngsters around.

St Austell must have an average age of about 23. Keeper was the oldest player i'd have said.

The game itself started okay, St Austell having the majority of the ball, playing some good stuff but really lacking in the final third. Penzance were happy to sit back and defend, and attack on the break, with the long ball over the top causing problems for the St Austell back line. I wasnt sure who would get the opening goal, Wade Brown missing a good chance at one end and then St Austell spurning chances at the other but it was Penzance who opened the scoring in the 28th minute (watch Matt Friday's video on twitter of it), cracking half volley by Gary Bell that flew into the top corner. An upset on the cards?

It didnt look likely, a few minutes later, a rash challenge in the Penzance box led to a St Austell penalty. The lively Marris stepped up and hit the bar.

First half ended there with no real additional action.

Second half followed in a similar vein, chances at both ends, Jacob Rowe having the best chance early in the second half, missing a one on one, putting it wide when he should definitely have scored. Penzance still looking dangerous on the break, St Austell's defence looking unable to cope with the experienced Brown up front, who added the second (midway through the half at a guess), fine strike from about 25 yards, good strike but went through the keeper who really should have saved it.

St Austell had a couple more chances to get back into it, Flores making a fine stop from a header from a St Austell corner, before making another smart stop (with his face) to earn his side a clean sheet.

Penzance probably had the better chances, St Austell seemed unable to break them down. Some tipped St Austell for a high finish, but with the defensive showing last night, it doesnt seem likely. Looked like they were missing a couple of players. I hope for their sake it was a one off bad day at the office, they will look back at the end of the season on this result with great disappointment i'm sure.
