ant.tux
Here are the weekend's games. If they were called off last week because of the weather, let's be honest it's not looking good this week, but fingers crossed some games will go ahead. cornishteddyboy
Veterans League CupPenzance 1-1 (3-4 pens) Holmans CrusiersFairly even game reduced to 70 mins, with everyone's agreement, to save the pitch at Pz Leisure Centre as Penlee Park out of action. Even affair with Holmans going 1-0 up in the first half when a low long range volley is grabbed by the Pz keeper but muddy ball squeezes under him. Pz equalise through an Andy Trathen strike with seconds to go. The ref said he had 5 seconds left on his watch! In the resulting penalty shoot-out the Magpies miss their first two, Holmans miss their third but go through to the next round, 4-3. A game of few chances but well done to all concerned who made a game of it and to the other ten people who watched apart from me, an increase of 1000% on the same fixture last season at the same venue when I was the only spectator!CTB

cornishteddyboy
Veterans League Cup 1st Round22nd November 2015Penzance 1-1 The Cruisers, Holmans3-4 on pensAtt – 11Holmans edged this match both during normal play and in the penalty shoot-out.In a game played at Penzance Lesisure Centre, due to Penlee Park being more bog than grass, both sides had few chances with the final pass or shot being a bit wayward. With the agreement of both sides the match was reduced to 35 mins a half to try and protect the pitch but it still became a lottery and a few tackles ended up being mistimed due to the slippery conditions. The ref let most go and only penalised the worst of them. Both sides played the ball on the ground for most of the game and didn't gain much overall advantage from the weather conditions. Saying that, the conditons did help Holmans take the lead. In the 11th minute they break on their right, square the ball to the edge of the 18yd box, a low volley goes in, Peter Bainbridge between the sticks for Penzance lands on it like a sack of spuds but the ball is so muddy and wet it squeezes out from under him like a rugby ball and pops into the net.Back and forth the sides go, past half-time and beyond. Drizzle starts, pitch gets worse, blow the whistle ref. Just as he is about to call a halt, Penzance break right, square to the back post for Andy Trathen to knock the ball into the net. Referee says there were 5 seconds left on his watch.Penalties, Penzance to go first, saved, Holmans score. Next Penzance pen, high and wide. Holmans score again, Magpies score, Holmans miss. Sudden death, a penalty apiece scored, final one scored for Penzance to make it 3-3. Then Holmans take their fifth and score to win 4-3 and take the tie. Both keepers covered in mud head to toe, players and spectators frozen stiff and wet. Roll on next week with the visit to the sunny climes of Perranporth.
