City five wins from title and promotion

FIVE wins from their final six games will ensure Truro City make more Cornish football history by becoming the first side from the county to play in the premier division of the BGB Southern League.

Monday evening's 1-0 win at Paulton Rovers ensured, at worst, a play-off place for Sean McCarthy's team, but both manager and squad have their eyes firmly fixed on the championship and automatic promotion.

They head the table by seven points after Windsor & Eton's 3-0 win at Andover on Tuesday, though the Berkshire side do have a game in hand.

But City's fate is very much in their own hands with their vastly superior goal difference, compared to their rivals, worth another point.

But 15 points will make mathematically certain of clinching the Division One South and West title no matter what other teams do.

And City defender Jake Ash is convinced that if they don't lose any more games, four of which are away including Monday's trip to North Leigh and a difficult Tuesday excursion to Thatcham Town, it will be City's title.

"We've got six games to go, and at this stage we have lost just four league games, the same amount we lost during last season. If we can keep that loss column at four, I'm sure we will end up champions, " said Ash.

"And if we do achieve that, I think it will be all the sweeter this year given that perhaps in the previous few seasons we have had it wrapped up fairly early.

"That, and the fact that the majority of this squad have already tasted the four promotions together, will keep as hungry right up until that trophy is in the cabinet."

But Ash, like manager McCarthy, knows the job is far from finished in what is set to be a thrilling April.

"We have put a run together at the right time and while we have put ourselves in the driving seat there is still a long way to go.

"Monday night was the first of three away games in a row and we came through that with flying colours.

"The lads are up for it and it was three points more and a game less to play."

For Saturday's trip to Oxfordshire, McCarthy will probably be again without defender Barry McConnell and skipper Matt Hockley who both have hamstring problems.

But Martin Watts, who missed the Paulton game with a knee problem, may be fit.

The Two Windsor & Eton players sent off against Truro City on 24th March start their ONE MATCH suspensions w.e.f 07/04/2009, that evening Windsor & Eton are AWAY to Abingdon United in a league match, could that be the leveller City fans would like to see.

With both City and Windsor playing away only about 12 miles apart, the Abingdon supporters may well hear City's supporting cast chanting "Whingers" across the Berkshire/Oxfordshire borders.
