Foxhole 4 Truro 3

Saturday 20th September 2008

In a pulsating, thrilling match, Richard Griffin's fine hat-trick sealed another fantastic victory against a strong Truro outfit who raced into a two goal lead within a quarter of an hour. After Warne and Lett had each gone close in the opening moments, and Cooper had latched on to Stevenson's huge clearance only to be denied by the legs of Ryan Holland, an unmarked Lett nodded home McQuade's deep free kick on nine minutes before Adam Holland, deputising for the suspended Rowe, misjudged a high ball, which allowed Stamp to turn and shoot into the corner from twelve yards.

Stamp may have added a third immediately after but his weak effort was cleared off the line, a miss which proved costly as Foxhole mounted a determined fightback. Warne's twenty yard free kick flew narrowly wide and Capeling headed over after a scramble before the referee spotted a push in a crowded box on 28. However, Capeling's penalty, albeit well-directed, lacked power and was saved by Stevenson to his right. Nevertheless, from the ensuing corner, the ball ricocheted kindly for May to blast home left-footed his first Foxhole goal. The home team were so dominant an equaliser seemed inevitable and, after both Watson and Butler had tested an increasingly stretched visiting defence, the less than convincing Stevenson flailed at Warne's inswinging corner and Griffin volleyed in from close range two minutes before the break.

There was no let up in the excitement in the second half. Eddy's finishing twice let him down, Griffin's drive was fielded and Warne's chip grazed the bar, as the action swung from end to end. Hobbs, again impressive against the dangerous Stamp, then released Griffin on 64 to lob a hesitant keeper, but, six minutes later, McQuade's intelligent pass caught May napping and Eddy displayed admirable composure to make it 3-3. Back came the Foxes, with Hobbs' unorthodox effort striking a post and Warne extending Stevenson, while substitute McIlroy overran the ball when clean through. Thirteen minutes from time, Warne sent Griffin racing clear to again beat the onrushing keeper, and a resolute Foxhole managed to hold on to their slender advantage with few alarms, although the patience of the excellent referee Mr Rose with a clearly wound-up Griffin finally expired near the end, and the marine joined Bromley (earlier cautioned for a foul on Cooper) in the book.

Foxhole (4-4-2): Ryan Holland 6; Matt May 7, Lewis Prince 7, Adam Holland 6, Phil Hobbs 8; Andrew Butler 7, Jason Warne 7, Adam Bromley 8, Tom Watson 8; Steve Capeling 6, Richard Griffin 9.

Referee: Mr Steve Rose (Penryn) 9.
