MULLION 5 PENZANCE 1
An ignominious second half during which they conceded four goals without reply saw Penzance plummet to a chastening defeat on a windy night at Clifden Park.
With Tyler Tonkin unavailable, Silas Sullivan donned the captain’s arm-band for the night and slotted in at left-band with Alfie Turner shunted inside to accommodate, partnering Liam Andrew in central defence. Oscar Massey, having plundered six goals in two games at Western League level for Barnstaple Town, was back in the front-line due to the North Devonians having no midweek commitments.
And, put clear by Michael Fitchett, the spritely ex-pro should have marked his Magpies return with a third minute goal. But Massey got tangled up trying to walk the ball around Harry Salmon and, barely a minute later, his side were behind. Released by Phil Cattran, Brodie Kemp drew Mikey Flores before delicately sliding a left-foot shot back past the keeper and inside his near post.
Penzance rallied strongly and got back on terms when a Sullivan corner from the right caught a massive gust of wind and whooshed its way straight into the net. The gale was to play a huge part in the match. At Clifden Park it generally howls in from Mounts Bay, so across the pitch right to left as one looks from the clubhouse end. But on this occasion it was an easterly, so with Penzance in the first half. And their failure to capitalise therefrom ultimately proved decisive.
Within two minutes of the restart, a corner from the left swerved conveniently in the elements straight onto the head of Chris Wormington to restore Mullion’s lead. The home captain then played a big part in the third goal, almost immediately afterwards. He was adjudged to have been fouled by Massey, and Kemp gleefully rammed home his second goal of the night from the penalty spot.
By the hour mark the contest was effectively over, the experienced Cattran being put through one-on-one against Flores and making no mistake. The Magpies were offered a ticket back into the match when home right-back Ryan Tonkin was dismissed for a second booking, but were unable to take advantage. They huffed and puffed with both Massey and Ollie Butler, a second half replacement for Rolandos Samnauskas, both firing shots into the side netting. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Seagulls still carried the greater attacking threat with the wind behind them and concluded the scoring when Cattran bundled home a deep free kick.
With a win apiece from their league fixtures, Penzance and Mullion will meet for a final time this season in a Ward Williams Cornwall Senior Cup tie at Penlee Park on Tuesday 7th November.
