MOUNTAINEER
Truro City returned to the top of the Zamaretto Premier League after defeating Cambridge City 2 - 0 thanks to two goals from Barry Hayles and the support of most of the 611 crowd. It was a good day for Truro with some of their nearest rivals dropping points, Dave Deacon regularly updates this section so I shall not post things he will obviously be posting later. Well done Torpoint, you came close, Poole Town must now be the favourites to win at Wembley, to only lose 2-1 away to them is an achievement bearing in mind that but for past ground difficulties they would now be playing at a far higher Pyramid level. Winning was therefore a great outcome, but with Salisbury and Leamington dropping points it has ended up even better, especially as Truro are back on top of the table. The game itself was decided by two goals in four minutes, not long after half-time, from Barry Hayles. The first a half-volley inside the penalty area from a clever chip across the box by Les Afful. The second a tremendous goal as Hayles raced onto a pass from Barry McConnell only just inside the Cambridge half. I think most of us expected the ageing striker to be caught for pace by a defender, but no way. He showed his class and composure by racing away and coolly slotting the ball to the side of the Cambridge advancing 'keeper. Cambridge never really threatened too much, in fact Rice had a relatively quiet game in goal for Truro. Pugh and Adams stopped anything coming through. The only down side was the sending off of Jeannin. The second yellow was worthy as he was stretching for the ball and caught Hughes, the Cambridge no.6. His problem was picking up the first yellow, needless as he never gave the ball back quick enough after a free-kick was awarded against Truro. Nevertheless, a well earnt three points. 611 a good attendance too.
