The Mill Awash with Light

It is normally the groundsman’s worst fear that the pitch will be flooded. However, this will not be the case on 9 January at 7.30 pm when Torpoint Athletic Football Club will play their first flood lit game against Plymouth Parkway in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.

This will be the culmination of eighteen months of hard work by the committee to seek the planning and funding required for the lights. A number of local organisations, companies, committee members and supporters kindly supported this project financially. Their names can be found on a plaque that has been put in the ‘Sports Bar’ of the club.

One of those organisations was Torpoint Athletic Youth and a number of their alumni may start this game, Rob Eddie, Darren Hicks, Lewis Kershaw, Mike Roberts Liam Thornton and Chris Todd for Torpoint with Sam Matthews, Kevin Robinson, and Simon Zinn for Plymouth Parkway. This goes to demonstrate the quality of the players that Torpoint Youth have and continue to produce, who go on to play in the Carslberg South West Peninsula League and other adult leagues.

Torpoint Athletic would like to thank the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Committee for their support and Sports Lighting for their hard work to install the floodlights amongst many.

The erection of the lights are part of ongoing improvements to the infrastructure of the club. It is envisaged that further improvements to the playing facility and the fabric of the club itself will be implemented in the close season.

Club Chairman Mr Paul Whitworth said “For over twenty years it has been our dream for Torpoint to play under lights at the Mill and this is now only hours away.

“The cost was always the big issue but with our promotion to the Peninsula Premier League in 2007 we were able to access additional funding from the Football Association.

“I would like to express my thanks to all those who have been involved”
