Helston 2 - 2 Newquay

The game at Kellaway Park went ahead despite a substantial amount of overnight rain. The pitch was in an incredibly poor condition; however, the referee felt that the game could go on. Newquay were looking to avenge their 3-1 defeat at Mount Wise earlier in the season and made a solid start. A key moment of controversy occurred in the opening minutes as Dave Rabone was taken down by a Helston defender on the edge of the box as he looked to round Barry in the Helston goal. The referee gave the foul and the Helston defender looked certain to be sent off, yet bizarrely the referee deemed that one of the full-backs could have covered enough ground to stop a clear goalscoring opportunity. The general consensus was that the referee had taken a surprising and easy option so early on and Andy Harris rightly picked up a booking for comments made about the decision, although the same punishment for both offences feels a little unreasonable.

Newquay didn't capitalise on the opportunity and it wasn't long before Helston were ahead. Good work down the left wing resulted in a corner and Graeme Blake managed to head the ball home in a crowded area despite James Merrikin pushing his goalbound effort onto the underside of the bar. The game remained very open and both sides were creating good chances, Barry was equal to two efforts from Shaun Lawrence and Dave Rabone, palming the ball away from goal in a very unorthodox but effective way.

Newquay worked hard to get back into the game and a long ball upfield from James Merrikin resulted in a generous free-kick being awarded for Newquay as the defender shielded Scott Palmer from the ball as it bounced back to the goalkeeper. Shaun Lawrence touched the ball to one side and Scott Palmer hammered home a low drive from 25 yards to leave the goalkeeper motionless to make the score 1-1. Newquay were caught napping and the ball broke down the left hand side as Jason Robertson turned the defender. Robertson cut inside and seemingly looked to cross the ball, his effort headed goalwards and caught Merrikin out and the ball went into the far corner of the net.

Half time quickly materialised and offered welcome respite to the referee who opted for a cheeky half-time ciggy.

The second half was dominated by Newquay and although Helston had occasional chances, Newquay really should have taken all three points. Neither side played particularly attractive football due to the condition of the pitch, but great work down the left by Ash Bradshaw resulted in a collision between Blake and Barry and Dave Rabone slotted home to restore parity. The resulting argument between the two players seemed to rattle Helston and for the following ten minutes they were holding out for a point. Rabone had further chances to win the game, striking marginally over and having a header cleared off the line late on. Helston could have won the game when a late Lee Hazeldine foul on Mike Hallibone resulted in a free-kick from the edge of the box hitting the side netting.

Blakey picks up the award for making the most monkey noises ever made by a human in a 90 minute period. Shanks wins an award for having a pair of comedy shorts and Barry wins a Wilson tennis racket to help keep Scott Palmer free-kicks out of his net...

Man of the match - Shaun Lawrence. Fantastic touch and distribution in tough conditions.

HP - 20 minutes of your observations would be very welcome! I did a quick crowd count just after the second half started, I counted 35 in cars and outside the clubhouse, one person on the far side and two people with cameras. How did I miss the other lot?!

Guest The Judge aka RED OR DEAD

Fair report Mitch, never going to be a good game on such a surface but at least the game went ahead. Cracking strike from Scottie again and if Rafa had his shooting boots on, the game would have been over by half time. Rafa is probably gutted but the fans all praised his superb positional play, he had to be in the right position in the first place to take the shots, just a shame most were wide of the mark, but he never stopped trying.

Credit to Ash for turning up just before thre break, he got stuck in traffic and it took him 3hrs from Plymouth, yes Plymouth for a reserve match for no money (are you reading this greedy Falmouth boys). When he did get on with 25mins to go, the quality from the left was clear and it was an Ash cross that Rafa put away clinically from 6 inches.

Fans gripe - tea bar refused to serve any refreshments before half time, definately cost the home club some money as we were starving, a tea would also have been nice on a cold afternoon.

64 crowd, are you sure ? There were 9 from Newquay and we doubled the visable crowd in the first half, a few more turned up at half time and I'm sure there were some in cars, but 64, does that include the players, officials, subs and tea lady ?
