Wendron CC United Reserves 0-3 Penzance Reserves

Penzance took three points away from Underlane defeating a weakened Wendron side 3-0 but it took until the second half for the Magpies to turn domination into goals. Over the whole ninety minutes Wendron only had one clear chance and three half-chances to score. Mind you the freezing cross pitch wind didn’t help.

The game kicks off and within thirty seconds Wendron break on the left, put in a cross but the ball eludes the runner coming into the six yard box. A long goal kick sees Penzance break on the right. A cross from Wade Brown to the 6yd line sees the keeper bravely snatch off the boot of Ashley Gray.

Then the rest of the half settles down to a midfield game with Penzance only having three chances to score in fourty minutes of play and the Wendron attack getting no closer than the edge of the box.

A quick Penzance through ball to Ashley Thomas beats Wendron’s off-side trap but his shot is well saved by the keeper. Another Penzance break sees Tom Withecombe shoot high and wide and finally a 35yd shot through the middle is saved by the keeper, who drops it then grabs it on the line.

It only takes Penzance four minutes of the second half to break the deadlock. A Penzance throw on the left, ball back to the thrower, cross into the box, Gray on the 6yd line, strong header into the net giving the keeper no chance. 0-1 after 49mins.

Penzance break again, a Thomas cross to the box is laid back for Steve Burt to shoot just wide of the upright. Then Wendron sweep up-field, beat the tackle but shoot just wide from the edge of the box.

On the hour Penzance make a substitution putting on Ian Philips for Withecombe.

Wendron break through the middle 35yds out but Ryan Holland makes a great tackle to deny a scoring chance. Penzance break left with Thomas who turns, shoots back across goal but the ball goes just wide of the back post.

Then we see the save of the game. Penzance get a free kick 35yds out, central midfield. The ball is knocked forward and the Wendron defence stand still. The Wendron keeper finds himself 3 on 1 at his post but gets down to block the shot from 4yds out. Brilliant and brave.

Both teams make a substitution.

Then Penzance double their lead. A through ball sees Brown run onto it and from 15yds out he beats the keeper with a low shot. Gray must get a mention because he very cleverly shoulder blocked a running defender who was trying to get to Brown. 0-2 after 76mins.

Wendron have a final effort on goal with a break and cross goal shot that goes wide of the post.

Then with a few minutes left we have a Penzance rarity, a goal from a corner (sixty three since they last scored from one). In fact it is scored direct. Ross Badcock curls it over and it drops behind the unsighted keeper at the back post. 0-3 after 85mins.

The game runs down with both sides waiting for the refs whistle so they can get out of the cold.
