Penzance Reserves 3-0 Porthleven Reserves

Penzance got back to winning ways on Wednesday evening at a cold but dry Penlee Park. After the unexpected home defeat against Penryn last week, the Magpies bounced back with a great team performance.

Porthleven have the first chance on goal when they break down the right, cross to the edge of the box but shoot weakly wide.

A couple of minute’s later neat Penzance play is rewarded by an early goal. A long ball down the right sees Wade Brown run onto it down to the goaline, he crosses long and a strong Tom Patrick header goes in at the back post. 1-0 after only 4mins.

Penzance with their tails up then put Porthleven under quite a lot of pressure with some neat forward passing and strong runs down the flanks. Charlie Penny has a 30yd shot grabbed by the keeper following a cross pitch ball from the left, Brown shoots wide after some neat passing from the midfield along the edge of the box and a Jon Ludlam shot is grabbed on the ground by the Danny Burrows, the Porthleven keeper.

Gary Matthews of Penzance gets booked for a silly challenge.

Then Penzance get a golden opportunity to double their lead when a player goes down in the box and the ref points to the penalty spot. Ross Badcock steps up but fires it high and wide to the right.

Penzance are still pushing forward and are next awarded a free kick on the right. Dan Magee drops the ball into the crowded box, it comes out and Ludlam fires in a wide 25yd screamer which if it had been on target would have been unstoppable.

With all this pressure Porthleven’s defence eventually crack again. Patrick runs down the left, flicks the ball over, the keeper gets in a tangle with one of his defenders and spills the ball and Devine has a simple 3yd tap-in at the back post. 2-0 after 36mins.

Just before half-time Penzance get a corner on the right. The ball is knocked into the centre of the box and James Street jumps highest but his strong header bounces of the top of the near post and away to safety.

The second half starts with a couple of clumsy challenges the worst a two-footed one on Penzance’s Matthews. The Porthleven player gets booked as does Penzance’s Devine for getting involved.

Porthleven break down the middle to the edge of the box where Tom Wadsworth fires in a fierce low shot that forces Craig Nicholls into a diving save to push the ball away.

Matthews is still incensed about the tackle and is putting it about a bit and as he was booked in the first half, on 55mins is substituted by Bradley Wills to avoid a sending-off. Porthleven also make a substitution. After this things calm down.

Then just before the hour mark Penzance are awarded their second penalty when Brown is brought down inside the box. Badcock steps up again and this time he makes no mistake firing down the middle as the keeper dived wide to save. 3-0 after 59mins.

Over the next few minutes Kevin Richards the Porthleven manager substitutes two more players.

Penzance’s Charlie Penny gets the ball on the half-way line dribbles past four players but spoils it all by tamely shooting at the keeper from the edge of the box when clear through.

Penzance then bring off Badcock replacing him with Tom Withecombe.

The Porthleven keeper makes a great save pushing a Patrick shot away for a corner, then punching the ball clear a few seconds later.

Penzance bring on their last sub, Ashley Gray for Brown.

In the last few minutes Porthleven push forward as Penzance go into their usual trick of shutting down ten minutes before the end of a match. This is when they’ve conceded a few goals this season.

Porthleven break through the middle and he keeper has to alert to grab a low shot. A Porthleven free kick avoids the wall but the keeper grabs. A Porthleven shot on the left is just wide.

Gray getting booked for not retreating 10yds from a Porthleven free kick.

After 94mins Penzance get the ball in the net but it is disallowed for pushing in the box. The ref calls a halt to the match after six minutes of injury time.

Penzance Man of the Match – Everyone played well but we give it to Ross Badcock. One minute he was attacking, the next defending and he did well when working just behind the front two being involved in a lot of the forward moves.

Penzance – Craig Nicholls, James Street, Darren Holsey, Charlie Penny, Jon Ludlam, Dan Magee, Ross Badcock, Liam Devine, Tom Patrick, Gary Matthews, Wade Brown

Subs – Bradley Wills (Matthews 50), Tom Withecombe (Badcock 70), Ashley Gray (Brown 75), Ryan Holland

Corner count Penzance 8-1 Porthleven (3-1 1st half)
