Andy Yeatman
Can anyone give me a brief bit of early history for the Charity Cup? Earliest mention I think I've seen is 1912. Know recent stuff about Southwest League, SWPL Prem/Div One West, and now Div One West. I'm sure the forum won't let me down.
Guest Postie Pidge
The "Durning Lawrence Cornwall Charity Cup" was donated to the CCFA by Mr Durning Lawrence of Truro City FC. It was agreed that teams would participate for it and in the latter years ir was on an invitation basis (usually 16 SWL and for a time 15 SWL and one from the ECPL and CCL on a rotation). Andy Yeatman
thanks pidge - any idea when first competed - think I've seen that Truro won it as early as 1912?? No doubt your boys have won it several times in the dim and distant past?
Dave Deacon
I think you'll find it was first played for in 1906 - Torpoint Athletic beating Truro City 3-1. In fact between that one and the last one before the Great War interrupted the competition, these two clubs dominated a little:- 1906 Torpoint Athletic 3-1 Truro City 1907 Newquay 4-1 Looe 1908 St Austell 3-1 Newquay (after 0-0 draw) 1909 Newquay 3-2 Liskeard Athletic 1910 Torpoint Athletic 3-2 Truro City 1911 Torpoint Athletic 2-0 Truro City 1912 Truro City 1-0 Torpoint Athletic 1913 Truro City 0-0 St Austell (Trophy shared) 1914 St Austell 4-1 Truro City The next one then was in 1920 when Truro City beat Looe 2-1 after first drawing 1-1. Andy Yeatman
Dave that's really helpful thanks. Needed the info for Dobwalls programme as it will be the first time they have appeared in the Charity Cup on Saturday. Quite interesting to see Looe figure a couple of times in the first years of the competition.
Dave Deacon
Looe's purple patch in this competition was in the 1920's - three times winners and three times runners-up! 1923 Looe 10-0 Porthleven 1924 Looe 3-0 Flushing 1925 Looe 2-1 Truro City (after 1-1 draw) 1920 Truro City 2-1 Looe (after 1-1 draw) 1929 Truro City 3-1 Looe 1930 Truro City 1-0 Looe also two other occasions in the final for Looe 1954 Newquay 6-2 Looe 1972 St Austell 4-1 Looe By the way the 10-0 scoreline above is the biggest winning margin in a final - who are you playing Saturday? :D
Andy Yeatman
Porthleven - tough game but Dobwalls on good form following narrow defeats by Bodmin and Penzance and comfortable win against Wendron last Saturday.
Dave Deacon
You missed it Andy - the reason for my question as to who you're playing? Cross reference it to who has suffered the heaviest defeat in a Charity Cup Final!
