bighairydave
What are people's thoughts on this? Taken from Twitter and YouTube clip showing incident. These officials are the professionals so what hope do us grassroots referees have!? The PGMOL will face serious questions after Halsey's accusations, with Gary Neville asking if it constitutes corruption 208SHARES Paul Childs Mark Halsey refereeing in 2011 Former Premier League ref Mark Halsey has claimed he was told by the refereeing body to say he had not seen incidents in matches. 55-year-old Halsey, who retired at the end of the 2012-13 season, made the shocking comments in in a debate over Sergio Aguero's appeal against a three-match ban that will rule him out of the Manchester derby. Manchester City were understood to be appealing the ban because TV images showed referee Andre Marriner was close to the incident and appeared to be looking clearly at Aguero's tussle with West Ham defender Winston Reid. But Halsey, in conversation on Twitter, made the shocking claim on Friday night that he has previously been told by PGMOL - the organising body for elite referees in England, to say he hadn't seen incidents that he had clearly witnessed. "I have been in that situation," he wrote, "when I have seen an incident and been told to say I haven't seen it." When quizzed further on who had pressurised him, Halsey revealed: "To be fair to the FA... it's not them. "It comes from within the PGMOL." The PGMOL was formed in 2001 to improve refereeing standards and provides officials for across the Premier League, Football League and FA competitions, receiving funding from all three bodies. Halsey's alarming claims, which may have helped sway the results of retrospective appeals, should cause concern throughout football. Alex Livesey Referee Mark Halsey in action during his last match before retiring Gary Neville approaches Mark Halsey Gary Neville, the former Manchester United defender and Valencia boss, tweeted: "Is that not corrupt? "Mark, I'd like to know who told you to say that! "@FA and @premierleague think you have a major issue on your hands!!" JENGLE
It really wouldn't surprise me if something like this has happened within the PGMOL. As for the Sergio Aguero incident, that is a red card offence in my opinion.
Mangle
So what if the ref saw an incident. He only ever has that one chance in a game to judge everything. He may get it slightly wrong, so a "panel of experts" can review the incident and correct any wrongs. The rule is crap, the talk of "corruption" is missing the point in my opinion. Good luck to Halsey, he may have started the debate to correct the overall rule.
Guest
If the referee witnesses an incident and he deals with it in the way he sees fit... FA can't do anything. If the referee witnesses an incident but decides it's not worth disciplinary action... FA can't do anything. If the referee doesn't see the incident... FA deal with it. If the referee only witnesses a certain part of the incident and doesn't take any action (as he's not seen the whole thing), if he says he did see a part of it... FA can't deal with it. So, it is absolutely no surprise that he would be told to say in his report that he saw nothing. That way, the FA can deal with it.
Mangle
Agreed. So the present ruling, which eliminates the FA being able to do something in the event that the ref may have "witnessed" an incident but got it wrong (for any number of reasons), needs fixing! Let's not jump on the "corruption" bandwagon.
JENGLE
I hope this isn't anything to do with corruption, so I don't want to jump on that bandwagon either. But with everything that is going on in football it wouldn't surprise me. A huge claim made by a respected official as well, it needs to be investigated by the appropriate authorities at least.
