Evely Cup

The Evely Cup was donated by George Evely, the first secretary of the East Cornwall League, to become an annual competition between the League Cup winners of the two leagues, East Cornwall and Combination. The venue of the match swaps each season from one end of the county to the other no matter who were the previous season’s victors.

First played for on Saturday 17th April 1965, with Porthleven defeating Camelford at St Blazey. In those days football wasn’t played on a Sunday and on that day four other Combination League games were being played at the same time!

Dave Gardner

So far, along with the Golf Day held at Mullion over £50,000 has been donated to local charities from the previous years.

Dave was born in Manchester to parents Eileen and Phil. In 1987 he transferred from Penzance to Falmouth Town

Under manager Trevor Mewton he made is debut for Town coming on as a substitute against Bugle on 26th August 1987, but had to substituted himself as he broke his nose!

He made a total of 258 appearances for Falmouth, scoring 60 goals before joining Porthleven when Trevor Mewton became their manager in 1994.

During his career Dave won three SWL Championships, two SWL Cups and three Cornwall Senior Cup runners-up medals. He also played for and captained the Cornwall side and finished his career as Assistant Player-Manager to Gary Marks, in the 2002-03 at Penzance.

Dave died of cancer at St Julia’s Hospice, Hayle on 23rd September 2003 leaving behind his beloved wife Sharon and daughters, Chloe and Jade.
