Charlestown Titans (u14) 3 St Stephen in Brannel (u14) 0

Saturday 9th January 2016

Battling St Stephen proved worthy opponents for the title-chasing Titans in an excellent match which was switched to Brannel's 3g pitch due to Nanphysick being waterlogged. The scoreline was definitely harsh on the Saints who came away wondering just how they had failed to score, having twice struck the post, squandered numerous presentable opportunities and having come up against an inspired Charlestown keeper.

Charlestown just edged the opening half but found it difficult to create clear-cut chances against a determined Saints rearguard. However, after a succession of crosses had caused some anxiety it was perhaps inevitable that one would eventually lead to a goal and, sure enough, a deep centre from the left was met with a glancing header by the Charlestown centre-forward on 23 minutes.

Following a similar pattern to last week, St Stephen's best moments occurred just after the break but the killer instinct was again lacking. This was a real shame as their continued positive play and spirit deserved better. The game was still in the balance until ten minutes from time when Titans broke away to notch a second with a lob from the edge of the box. Saints knew their luck was out when, still pressing forward, the points were sealed when the visiting outside-left let fly from a tight angle, his effort very probably sneaking through a hole in the net at the near post.
