Darin Morse
Foxhole 1 Hayle 0 Saturday 1st September 2007 Foxhole gained their first points thanks to Richard Griffin's fourth minute strike, bundled in from close range from Warne's corner. It was another battling display against technically superior opponents who, for all their greater possession and clever interplay, rarely required Ryan Holland to extend himself. While Palmer's cross shot only required a touch and Carey twice went close from distance and had a goal chalked off for offside, generally the home defence successfully contained the Hayle attack, for whom Shiels appeared the most threatening, while the diminutive Matthews was proving elusive with his forays into the box. For their part, Foxhole were similarly unable to prise open a visiting rearguard well served by Quinn and James, although Hill's excellent run and cross was nearly converted by the stretching Ames. The Foxes marked more tightly after the break, and consequently little was seen of the Hayle dangermen, so the single goal lead was maintained in relative comfort. The better chances fell to striped shirts, particularly the hard-working Ames who had a shot blocked, another effort cleared off the line and a third fly narrowly wide, while Griffin should have netted another Hill centre to the far post. The biggest talking point, however, was the eccentric performance of the referee who, in a game totally devoid of malice, managed to book five Foxes (for the record: Griffin, Morris and Hill for innocuous fouls, and May and Adam Holland for alleged time-wasting). Foxhole(3-5-2): Ryan Holland 6; Dexter Lawrence 7 (sub. David Grose 5), Adam Rowe 6, Mark Rowe 7; Jason Warne 6, Richard Griffin 6, Andrew May 6, Colin Morris 5 (sub. Adam Holland 6), Steve Panter 7; Liam Ames 7, Scott Hill 6 (sub. Liam Nicholls 5). Hayle(3-5-2): Steve Luke; Liam Quinn, Andy James, Mark Peters (sub. Ryan Holland); Adam Palmer, Scott Jose (sub. David Bevington), Alan Roberts, Gary Matthews, Matt Davies; Matt Shiels, Rob Carey (sub. Simon Dixon). Referee: Mr Steve Paul (Delabole) 6.
