Penzance Reserves 0-4 Illogan RBL

Illogan came to Penlee Park chasing a League and Cup double, having been in 3rd placing in the league and in the League Cup S-F. Overall they were just too strong for a Penzance side that included a couple of first team players but they Magpies were unlucky not to get on the score sheet when a late header came back off the bar.

Gerran James playing in goal has to be on his toes when he has to dive to push away a free kick taken from the edge of the box. This is followed by Illogan breaking right to Dan Bowman who tries a low cross goal volley that goes past the back post.

Once again James has to be on the ball to palm away a shot from the left before he is beaten after 22mins when former Penzance player Duane Britton, who started the season at St Day, lobs him from 15yds after Illogan win the ball on the edge of the box.

The game settles down for the rest of the half but Illogan once again try to lob the keeper but the ball goes long. A couple of long range Magpies shots go well wide.

H-T

Britton attacks from the off but scoops the ball high over the bar from 15yds.

50mins on the clock when a goal kick is miss-kicked and drops to John Jones who volleys the ball into the net from 30yds with James stranded.

An Illogan corner knocked to the near post is flicked on and has to be cleared off the line.

68mins gone and the score is 0-3 after Illogan get a free kick just outside the 18yd box, on the right. Ian Cullingham steps up and sweetly curls the ball around the wall and in at the near post.

Good work by Joe Day down the right sees him cross the ball square to Tom Putterill who heads against the bar, then follows up with a tap in that is cleared off the line.

Another Penzance break down the middle is flicked left to Stuart Strong who shoots low only to see the keeper save and clear with his legs.

The James does the same thing down the other end when Britton tries to flick the ball past him following a through ball down the middle.

The game is just slowing down for the final few minutes when the Penzance keeper loses the ball on the edge of the box and Steve Proctor has the simple task of scoring Illogan’s fourth by running in and tapping into the empty net.

The final four minutes are played out in almost silence as the crowd filters out and at the final whistle Illogan are still on course for that double.

Penzance Man of the match goes to Danny Magee for doing the work of three men, attacker, defender and midfield.

Cornwall Combination League

7th May 2011

Penryn Athletic Reserves 6-0 Penzance Reserves

Penzance were once again hit by players being injured, preferring to play cricket, first team call-ups and arrived at Kernick Way with a bare 11 players including manager Allen Spencer-Smith. Can you imagine Allen’s delight when one of the lads had brought along three friends to watch the match. Perfect two were signed up there and then and put on Magpies shirts and played the second half! The third friend would have played but he was playing in a cup final the next day. So is that our new policy choose the team from whoever turns up using spectators to make up the numbers?

Bryan Andrew played his first game for weeks and introduced us to another son Jake who played well throughout and got stronger as the game went on and I made him the Penzance Man of the Match. Another good defender/midfielder in the making. Harry Corin, another debutant also had a good game but Jake just shaded it.

The game was effectively over by half time with Penryn notching up five of their six goals and either Penzance were stronger in the second half or Penryn sat back a bit. The score could have been worse as Penryn hit the bar 3 times and post once. Tom Putterill ploughed a lonely furrow up front and for the whole 90mins the Magpies never threatened the Penryn goal once. We did get excited once when we got a corner in the first half!

Within a couple of minutes of the start Penryn hit the bar twice both from crosses from the right which instead of falling to strikers seem to float in the air and hit the woodwork.

14mins on the clock when the first goal goes in. A long ball from the back, down the right for Ryan Reeve to run in to the box and score with a low cross goal shot.

A diagonal ball left to right falls to Penryn’s Matthew Potts who’s cross goal shot goes high.

25mins on the clock and it’s 2-0. Penryn break left, square to Lee Jeffries on the edge of the box who fires in low through the keeper’s arms. The next goal is scored 3mins later when another break on the left allows the balled to be squared to Jason Roberts who has a simple tap in from 5yds at the back post.

The 4th goal follows in the 32mins when Penryn win the ball in mid-field, thread the ball through the middle for Roberts to turn and shoot in from 10yds.

The 5th arrives in the 44min following a throw on the left which is squared across goal to Dave Broglino to knock in from 6yds.

H-T

Penzance start the half by having a swap around to try and confuse Penryn bringing on their subs and it works for 4mins until Penryn get their 6th in the 49min. They lose the ball on the edge of the box and Tom Annear has the simple job of running in and flicking the ball past the keeper.

As i say Penzance seem to toughen up and hold Penryn at bay for the rest of the half apart from a close range shot that bounces off the bar and an Ollie Moody shot following a cross from the right that nicks the outside of the post on its way through.

F-T

Penzance – Wayne Wager, Stuart Strong, Jimmy England, Sam Clough, Tom Putterill, Jake Andrew, Liam Andrew, Bryan Andrew, Allen Spencer-Smith, Harry Corin, Adam Box

Subs – Daniel Burt (L Andrew 45), John Hetherington (Strong 45)

Corners: Penryn 6-1 Penzance (1-1 1st half)

Fouls conceded: Penryn 7-8 Penzance

Crowd – 33 (3 from Pz but it should have been 35 with 5 from Pz)
