Ludgvan 2-3 Penzance Reserves

Everyone has heard the phrase “Some you win, some you lose”. Well in the last couple of games it’s happened to Penzance, a goal for and a goal against deep into injury time. The previous week they lost to a 95 minute strike by RNAS Culdrose and this week won at Ludgvan with a 94 minute winner. Swings and roundabouts!

Penzance built up a 2-0 half-time lead in this match and looked to have the game won but Ludgvan came out fighting and could have even been 3-2 up if the upright was a couple of inches to the left!

The pitch at Ludgvan looked perfect for football and the ref was so keen to get going he kicked off 7 minutes early.

Penzance have the early pressure with a Gerran James header grabbed by the keeper following a break on the left. A Steve Hancock shot goes high over the bar following a corner on the left. Finally Ashley Thomas fires in one that curls just wide following another break on the left.

Ludgvan come back at Penzance. They break right, cross in but the shot from the edge of the box goes over the bar. They then have a goal disallowed following a break left, a low cross in and Tom Hosking knocks it in from a couple of yards out. The flag goes up, the ref goes over to consult with the lino and after about a minute of chat disallows the goal.

A minute or so later Penzance get a free kick out left near the half way line. The ball comes over, it’s flicked on by Mark Vercesi to James who heads in cross goal from 6yds out. 34mins, 0-1.

Five minutes later the lead is doubled wnen the magpies break left, cross to Thomas who volleys in a curler from 25yds that twists away from the keepers outstretched arm. 39mins, 0-2.

The Ludgvan keeper has to be on his toes as Penzance get a free kick on the edge of the box. The ball comes in low and he gets down to push it away from the bottom of his right hand post.

H-T

Ludgvan come out fired up and within six minutes have pulled a goal back. The ball is pushed forward, Penzance lose it on the edge of their box, Hosking runs onto it and fires in a low shot from 15yds out. After 51mins it’s 1-2.

Following a Penzance break Vercesi curls a shot around the post before Jowan May takes the ball down the left, cuts in, shoots low from an acute angle but the keeper saves well with his feet and the ball canons up and over the bar for a corner.

Ludgvan are then awarded a penalty when a player runs down the line and is tripped by Charlie Jameson. Ref points to the spot, up steps Mike Cruse who knocks straight down the middle for his 12th goal of the season. 2-2 after 65mins.

Penzance take off Charlie James and send on Chris Bullock for the final 20mins.

Ludgvan break into the box, vetran John Matthews knocks the ball on, Nicholls gets down to palm it away, a foot comes in and the balls curls and spins towards the empty net but somehow hits the upright and clears.

The Ludgvan keeper then earns his corn by palming over a Hancock header following a break from the right.

Penzance substitute Ryan Holland with Lewis Caspell.

The game is coming to a conclusion when Caspell runs down the left cross, a flick on and Bullock shoots high from 10yds to cruelly deny Ludgvan a share of the spoils, 90+4mins 2-3.
