cornishteddyboy
Cornwall Combination League 5th December 2009 Penzance Reserves 4-3 Mullion Penzance’s run under new manager Mike Devine continues with another victory making it five wins from five. Mind you Mullion made the Magpies work hard for the points and deep into injury time could have snatched a draw. It was a case of throwing away a good lead, then wasting half an hour lobbing high balls into the Mullion penalty area, which they soaked up with no problems, before a piece of individual skill by Ashley Thomas earned the points. Why they kept putting in high balls is a mystery as anyone could see from the goals and chances the Mullion keeper was weak on low cross goal shots. The match kicked off fourty minutes late as the referee had car trouble. Mullion kick off facing the sea end and immediately lose the ball. A long ball from the back from Ross Badcock to Bradley Wills down the left, over to the right where Thomas fires just wide with a cross goal shot from the edge of the box. A minute later a Penzance free kick on the right is taken by Thomas who fires one in cross goal and it just eludes two runners coming in. The game evens out for about ten minutes before exploding with three goals in four minutes. On 13mins Penzance get a corner on the left. Thomas knocks the ball in low and hard. The keeper gets his hand to it but it’s going so fast he only knocks it down to Liam Devine who from 6yds out belts it in through a crowd of players to put Penzance one nil up. Two minutes later the lead is doubled as a long high ball from the back fools a Mullion defender and bounces past him. Thomas runs in at an angle from the right and from the edge of the box shoots low cross goal into the net to make it 2-0 after 15mins. Mullion come back at Penzance and score. They work the ball around the middle before captain Jason Robertson lobs the Magpies defence. Chris Ensink runs through and knocks the ball low past Craig Nicholls to make it 2-1 after 17mins. The game quietens down for a few minutes with most of the pressure being forced by Penzance. They have a couple of chances in that time. Badcock turns and shoots just wide following a break down the right by Thomas and Wills shoots wide following a solo run from the halfway line. On 36mins Penzance regain their two goal cushion through Max Davies. Penzance break right, the ball is laid back for Davies to run onto it from the left and he fires a low cross goal shot into the net from the edge of the box to make it 3-1. Once again the game slows down until it’s half-time. H-T Penzance make a couple of forced substitutions during the 15mins of the second half, Chris Bullock on for Joe Day and Adam Fletcher for Devine. From the hour mark Mullion seem to get a second wind, start playing the better football, forcing Penzance back. All Penzance seem to want to do is lob one high ball after another into the Mullion box. On 63mins Mullion get a corner on the right. It’s is put in low and Lee Cattran gets a flick to put it into the net to make it 3-2. A Bullock header goes wide after a good break down the right but once again the jitters start in the Magpies defence. Hurried clearances hand it strait back to Mullion and it is no surprise when then equalise on 70mins. Another corner, this time one on the left. The ball is knocked over to the back of the six yard box where Robertson directs a strong downwards header that gives the keeper no chance. Good goal to make it 3-3. Penzance substitute Davies with Ryan Williams for his first game. Mullion keep pushing but against the run of play Penzance suddenly run at their opponents defence. Working the ball left to right it reaches Thomas wide right, 40yds out. He sprints forward round one, into the box to fire low cross goal. The keeper gets a hand to it but the shot is so strong he can only help it on it’s way. 4-3 on 85mins. Back come Mullion looking for an equaliser. Penzance hold out but are lucky when Mullion breaking left shoot from an acute angle only to see the ball rebound off the far upright. F-T It was good to see Ian Philips at the match, the Penzance youngster who fractured his skull last season. Thank goodness everything is now OK. Penzance – Craig Nicholls, Kim Smith, Joe Day, Bradley Wills, James Street, Darren Ball, Ross Badcock, Max Davies, Liam Devine, Ashley Thomas, Andre Otto Subs – Chris Bullock (Day 59), Adam Fletcher (Devine 62), Ryan Williamson (Davies 78), Ryan Andrew, Jowan May, Charlie McWilliams Corners – Penzance 4-6 Mullion (2-2 1st half) Crowd – 23 (2 from Mullion) I did a foul count for once and it was Penzance 11 Mullion 12. Penzance didn’t commit their first foul until the 21mins.

cornishteddyboy
Yes. He clashed heads with Steve Hancock whilst defending our goal. He told me he's had some games for Gulval and is knocking in the goals but would like to come back to the Magpies if he could.
