MAGPIES SAFELY THROUGH

Sunday December 6th 2009

Cornwall Divison 1 Cup 1st Round 2nd leg - Marazion 1-1 Penzance

(Rudge 35)

Penzance took a big 7-1 lead to Marazion, for the second leg of the Cornwall League Division 1 Shoe Boy Cup quarter-final, going through 8-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw.

Candice Britten was the first to hit the target, with a hooked effort on the turn, that Kirsty Olds gathered. Grace Rudlin turned a shot from Jazz Forbes round the post, before Katie Whittaker missed a chance with an air shot and Britten beat a defender and shot across the face of goal.

But on 27 minutes. Forbes raced down the right and fired high over Rudlin into the far corner. Olds collected Britten's free-kick, despite Nicki Ellis's challenge and then turned another Britten strike round the upright.

The Magpies were level on 35 minutes, Carly Fitzgerald put the ball in the box after a corner and Meghan Rudge nudged in her first ever goal, sparking great celebrations. Britten almost put through her own goal before the break, as she sliced a Marazion free-kick to Rudlin.

The second-half started energetically, Britten forced a good stop from Olds, then Rudlin made a fine save from Carly Jacka. Kath Campbell missed a great chance for the hosts, at the far post from a corner, Linzi Williams also went close, just clearing the visitors bar.

With both sides only fielding ten players, Ellis battled on despite her ankle being scraped badly by studs.

Britten rested her broken toe in goal for the last 20 minutes and Rudlin took her place as the sole striker, going close to a winner, as Olds caught her shot on the turn.

The Magpies finish 2009 at home to St.Agnes this Sunday, in a Cornwall Division 1 fixture, 2.30pm at Penzance FC.

Penzance: Rudlin; C.Fitzgerald, Lawrence, T.Matthews; Whittaker, N.Ellis, G.Fitzgerald, A.Ellis, Rudge; Britten.

Good game, played in windy conditions. Pz worked hard with only 10 v 11 players to start. Marazion went down to 10 part way through 2nd half and then down to 9 for last 10mins.

Lots of tries on goal from both teams depending if they were with the wind or not.

The two Pz centre-backs were outstanding and got my vote for joint players of the match.

Marazion's best player was their No 10, Forbes. A threat every time she ran with the ball.

Well done girls.
